An exception to AWSA Rule 13.01 to allow for the “Turn and Burn” format during the 2010 ski year has been granted with a complete review of results to follow at the conclusion of the season.  In the “Turn and Burn” protocol a slalom skier, upon completion of a round, can signal to the boat that they would like to go directly into their FINAL round now; i.e. turn and burn (T&B).  As an example, a skier who usually skis deep into -38 falls early at -35.  They then choose to start immediately at -32 for their third round (from starting dock) and to proceed quickly to their goal of 5 or 6 at -38 or beyond.  This option is only available to the skiers in unseeded (Class“C” or under) tournaments.

A large contingent of skiers led by Joe Darwin began in December, 2009,working with the AWSA Rules Committee to formulate an exception template that any LOC can utilize.  In experimental tournaments, the Turn and Burn format received positive reviews from both the skiers and officials.   Whenoffered, it can reduce the time necessary to run an event and add excitement and strategy to an otherwise routine tournament.
