How did you get into skiing?
I was a Rock & Roll National champion when I was young. My partner broke his back so we couldn’t do throws anymore - He can still walk. Suddenly I had a lot of time on my hands and my mum thought I got a bit to restless so she asked me, if I wanted to do a summer activity week in Nivaa waterski club, which is a sea club. Of course I did and at the end of the week they had a tournament of who could cross the wakes the most time in a minute. I won my first tournament that day and also a 1 year membership. I actually skied on the sea for 7 years, maybe that’s why my slalom style is a little wild, haha
When did you decide to commit yourself to the skiing and take it seriously?
It just sort of happened. I went to ski with Ray (Ray Stokes) in 97 and shortly after I was competing in pro events. I have always taking my skiing serious though, no matter what level I have been on. Just al ways enjoyed it and have fun doing it.
Do you consider yourself to be an adrenaline junkie?
Hmm, well I do love speed and everything exiting and a little dangerous, so I guess you could say there is a little speed devil in me, yes.
Can you give us a rundown of your average day during the season?
Eat, sleep, jump. Haha, well it’s almost like that. Coffee and big brekkie first, I can’t do anything without it. I ski and in between sets I work on Stokesskis, GTF and do my emails, gym and then it’s time to cook some dinner.
What’s your favorite lake to fly at?
Hazelwood’s, love it - every day!
What has been your most memorable moment so far?
Breaking the World Record in jump by far. Jumping 2 pb;s in the set as well. (181, 184 & 187)
Being at my home site with my long time coach Ray, who never leaves my side if he can help it,
Tom my partner, who is just amazing & it was his birthday! Toms family + lots of friend there.
How do you prepare for a big competition?
By getting into a steady routine.
What is the atmosphere like behind the scenes? What is your relationship with the other GTF?
Good, we have lots of fun together and are good friends of the water.
Any funny or most embarrassing stories you care to share?
Breaking my partners back in Rock & Roll
Do you think the jump suit will ever evolve to be figure flattering?
It has!!! The Stokes jump suit is very hot on!
What are your suitcase essentials when you’re on the road?
Snacks, screwdriver, sunglasses, spare fins
What have been your biggest career setbacks?
Well that would be right now. A shattered calcaneus heal frac ture that went necrotic (died). 4 surgeries on my right heel so far. I will come back, but will take my time. Miss it very much!!
In your opinion what have your greatest achievements been so far?
Staying on top winning tournaments for several years in a row, breaking the world jump record.
Who or what are your inspirations?
I have lots of things that inspire me. My coach Ray Stokes has always been motivating me forward and is in himself just so inspiring as a person. My partner Tom who motivates me every day on and off the water. He is an amazing 3 - event skier with more natural abilities than any. Also just the urge for being the best at what I do!
Where would you like GTF to be in 5 years?
To have created more financial stability and to have established an international world class Girls That Fly tour.
Why should everyone read this buy a GTF calendar?
I hope they will support us. We are trying to make women waterski jumping and waterski jumping in general more popular throughout the world. That deserves support I think. So please go to our shop on www.girlsthatfly.org and support the Girlsthatfly!
**The BOS team would like to send our condolences to June Fladborg and the Stokes family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you through this tough holiday season and always. We'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Ray for his great impact and influence on our sport and its athletes, a true legend that literally shaped our sport--we will miss you.
