Britt Hoyland and Executive Director, Bob Crowley out for a ski ride during their lunch break.Happy to mold my passion for the water with my BA in Sports Management, I am Britt Hoyland, the Director of Competition and Events at USA Water Ski. January will mark my first year working for headquarters and it was a great year filled with learning and experience. Coming from the surf industry and growing up on the coast of North Carolina, I was shocked to find an entirely new world of life on the water beyond salt water.
My goal is to encourage other water sports enthusiasts, like myself, to fall in love with this world behind a boat. Overseeing all competition aspects for the nine sport disciplines under the USA Water Ski umbrella, I serve as the primary staff liaison for all club programs, sanctioning and events. I am working with USA-WS national tournament organizers to support the creation and delivery of programs for the development of all of our water sports from amateur competitions to pro events.
Prior to joining USA Water Ski, I worked for the United States Surfing Federation and Florida Surfing Association, staging various events from professional to non-profit and community-outreach initiatives. As Contest Director, I have worked closely with a number of clients including the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), Meredith Corporation, IMG, Rip Curl, Quiksilver, Vans, Hype Promotions and Brillo Productions. I have extensive experience working and growing programs for non-profit organizations such as the Special Olympics, Wounded Warrior Project and Florida School for the Deaf and Blind. Having directed large scale events with 1,000+ competitors and 100,000+ spectators, I believe I am capable of not only bringing water skiing and our other sport disciplines back into the media's eye; but also creating the festival atmosphere that will showcase our sport's the true athletic talents.
In 2014, USA Water Ski will be celebrating our 75th year of being on the water. This year not only honors the true accomplishments and history of the sport, but also opens doors for celebrating the next generation of water skiing. I am happy to provide to our members, clubs, and tournament organizers with the tools or ideas for staging unforgettable events, while building close relationships with our cities and sports commissions. Feel free to contact me at [email protected] or on my direct line 863-508-2093.
Looking forward to another great year on the water!

In one of the most fascinating World Waterski Championships in recent years, four Championships records were established and history was made in the Men’s Overall contest. With all eight defending World Champions on site, only two succeeded in actually holding these titles for another two years. The magnificent Lago los Morros site on the outskirts of Santiago Chile created a perfect mix of thrills and heart break in these fascinating International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (IWWF) World Championships. In glorious 26C / 79F sunshine all week, with a slight head wind on occasions, the athletes from 32 countries could not have hoped for better. With World Records falling regularly during this year, expectations were high as Slalom began – and we were not disappointed. While the defending World Champions Whitney McClintock (CAN) and Thomas Degasperi (ITA) put in great performances once again, it was Regina Jaquess (USA) and Nate Smith (USA), who established new World Championships Records in securing their new titles of World Champion on this occasion. Jaquess was the first woman ever to achieve a score on the short 10.25m / 41 off Slalom line in a World Championships. Her score of one buoy made history. Nate Smith also set a World Championships Slalom Record of 3.5 buoys on the 10.25m / 41 off line. These two athletes are also the current holders of World Slalom Records. Whitney McClintock (CAN) and Clementine Lucine (FRA) took silver and bronze in the women’s event. Will Asher (GBR) and Fred Winter (GBR) did likewise for the men. Again in Tricks, the current and new World Record holder Erika Lang (USA), at just 18 years of age, went on to set a new World Championships Tricks Record of 9570 points here in Santiago this weekend. This was just 10 points ahead of Iris Cambray (FRA) who took the silver medal. Clementine Lucine (FRA), the first woman ever to exceed 10,000 points, took the bronze medal. In the Men’s event, Aliaksei Zharnasek from Belarus, the current World Record holder, was one of only two World Champions to retain his title this time around. Twenty four year-old Pierre Ballon (FRA) took the silver medal with the highly experienced Oleg Deviatovski (BLR) securing the bronze. In both the men and women’s events, clearly there is enormous young talent rising to the top. The future of Tricks looks very bright. As ever, in perfect conditions, the Jump event thrilled once again. With outstanding performances, dramatic crashes, many surprises and lots of emotion, the spectacle of bravery, skill and total commitment had the packed arena totally captivated. To fully appreciate the emotion involved, when Australia’s Jacinta Carroll’s father jumped into the water to hug his daughter for her 56.0m / 184ft winning gold medal performance, this meant a lot more than many might have realised. Jacinta’s long-time coach Ray Stokes was taken by cancer not too long ago, and for many, this emotional moment was also his. Her outstanding performance here set a new Championships Record. Finland’s Jutta Lammi, a past World Games Champion, took second place ahead of the defending World Jump Champion, Natalia Berdnikava (BLR) who is recovering from injury. The Men’s Jump event was just as dramatic. With spectacular crashes from Damien Sharman (GBR) and Scot Ellis (USA) who both survived injury, the defending World Champion, Freddy Krueger (USA), was not only recovering from injury but he also struggled to even qualify for these Finals. The best he could do during the week was 64.6m / 212ft. This put him in the middle of the pack in the Finals running order. His opening jump was extraordinary against this background – 69.0m / 226ft. It proved once again that this is a rare athlete with exceptional talent. Not only did it provoke a standing ovation from the cheering Chilean audience, it totally reflected the character of the man. At this point, with six jumpers still on the dock, the pressure was on. Right through to the final jumper, none could outperform Krueger. The last competitor, Ryan Dodd (CAN), was the one who might do it. His second jump was 68.5m / 225ft, equalling his Preliminary Round score. Could he find another half meter on his final attempt? The cheering audience and waving Canadian flags knew that this was the moment. Dodd’s personal best score of 71.4m suggested that gold was within reach. Unfortunately, his second distance of 68.5m was to be his best on this occasion. Freddy Krueger (USA), World Champion once again, was only the second athlete to successfully defend his title here in Santiago Chile.
Usually, once the Jump event is over, that is the end of the drama. However, a totally captivating Overall story now emerged as the complicated score calculations to identify these winners were finalised by Chief Judge Candido Moz (ITA). This is the Triathlon of Waterskiing involving performances in Slalom, Tricks and Jump. Firstly, in the Women’s event, Regina Jaquess (USA) showed that her Slalom skills are unbeatable. As World Champion, World Slalom Record Holder and World Championships Record Holder, this strength gave her the perfect edge in Overall scores. It also gave her the well deserved Gold Medal. Defending champion Whitney McClintock (CAN) and Clementine Lucine (FRA) took Silver and Bronze. The Men’s Overall battle was unique this year. Again there is some background to this. Almost 20 years ago, the creator and owner this beautiful man-made Lago los Morros site had a dream – to build a perfect lake and have at least one of his son’s become a World Open Champion. Not only did he construct a magnificent facility but his son Felipe Miranda had almost achieved his dream. In recent years, he already secured the World Overall title for IWWF Juniors and U21 and now the Open title was the final hurdle. With two past World Open Overall Champions to beat – Adam Sedlmajer (CZE) and Javier Julio (ARG), this was the moment! While Sedlmajer performed well in Slalom and Tricks, his Jump score was disappointing. Julio’s Trick’s score also let him down on this occasion. Martin Kolman (CZE) was also very strong in Slalom and Jump. However, it was time for a miracle. Felipe Miranda was crowned World Overall Champion and his father’s 20 year dream came true. This was a perfect ending to a first class World Waterski Championships. While the Team results really showed the dominant strength of Team (USA) once again, the battle between Canada and France for second and third places was unequalled. In the end, Team Canada took the Silver Medal by a margin of just over three points. France needed just a little extra in Slalom and Jump but it was not to be on this occasion. Congratulations to Team (USA).

http://www.goode.com/images/2013WorldsPodiums.jpg Clementine Lucine (left), Regina Jaquess (middle) and Freddie Winter combined to win half of all slalom medals handed out at the 2013 Worlds.
Team GOODE won half of all slalom medals awarded at the 2013 Water Ski World Championships as the tournament concluded today in San Bernardo, Chile.
Leading the way for Team GOODE was Regina Jaquess, who took the gold in Women’s slalom to cap one of the greatest two-year runs the sport has ever seen. She has not lost a slalom tournament since March of 2012, a streak that includes victories at the Masters, Malibu Open, World Games, a slew of professional tournaments, and now the Worlds.
She scored 1 buoy at 41-feet off in the final round to earn the title over second-place finisher Whitney McClintock, who scored 4 at 39-1/2 off. Clementine Lucine (2 at 39) earned the bronze and April Coble-Eller (0.5 at 39) finished fourth, giving Team GOODE three of the top-four spots in Women’s slalom. (Post-competition interview with Regina
.)In Men’s slalom rising-star Freddie Winter gave Team GOODE its third slalom medal of the championships by taking bronze. Freddie tied Will Asher and Stephen Neveu for second place with 3 at 41 off, but Will was awarded second based on preliminary round scores and Freddie topped Stephen in a run off for the final podium spot. Nate Smith (3-1/2 at 41) took home the gold to win his first career world title. (Post-competition interview with Freddie Winter
.)The bronze medal completed a big year for Freddie, who has emerged as a top-level threat within the pro ranks. He fished second at the European Championships (after a run off for first), sixth at the Diablo Shores Pro-Am and scored a new PB of 5 buoys at 41-feet off at the GOODE Bracket Challenge in September. It was Freddie’s first time competing in the World Championships.
Defending and two-time World Champion Thomas DeGasperi finished fifth, a remarkable fourth-straight Worlds he’s has a top-five finish.
Team GOODE continued to rack up the medals in overall as Regina edged Whitney McClintock for her third career (2003 and 2005) World overall gold and Clementine taking the bronze. GOODE skier Javier Julio earned the silver in Men’s overall.
In the team competition, the United States took the gold, with Canada and France finishing second and third, respectively.

George Haswell, 2006 mens 8 Nationals Overall winner, Numerous Regional championships, Wet Set club member for 5:30am 11/26/2013. George will always be remembered as a Great friend to us all. His presence was acute, listening to so many, even when his hearing was poor! George always stayed active, if not on the water, then snow skiing, or hiking with Fran in the Sierra’s or Joshua Tree or somewhere, when not working on his cabin in Big Bear which is where his ashes will be spread in the Rose garden so passers by can still pay him greetings. This Pillar of So Cal waterskiing has touched multi generations reaching back to the 70’s. Survived by son George Haswell, Kirk Haswell and Fran Penn. No services, he simply wouldn’t want that.
But remember his fire, his passion, his ability, coaching and encouragement and see if you can do as much as well as George Haswell.

Throughout the week, the live Webcast of these Waterski World Championships can be viewed atwww.IWWF.tv
Rarely have we seen such excellent Waterski competition conditions. The Lago los Morros man-made lake, on the outskirts of Santiago, provides facilities which are amongst the best in the world and so performances are also expected to be exceptional. With Official Practice completed on Monday, the remainder of the week will see all athletes chasing one of the 12 Finals places on Saturday and Sunday. On Tuesday, 59 will compete in Slalom and Tricks, on Wednesday, 83 will compete in Jump and Slalom, Thursday will be a Tricks day with 60 on the water and Friday will be exclusively Jump with 61 athletes involved. The top 12 will then take on the Finals battle for the medals on Saturday and Sunday. Apart from the Webcast, live scores can be followed throughout on:

http://www.sportcal.com/images/others/iwsf/2013_25_03.jpghttp://www.sportcal.com/images/others/iwsf/2013_25_04.jpgThese World Waterski Championships are also unusual. All current World Champions are on site this time to defend their titles. These include Thomas Degasperi (ITA) and Whitney McClintock (CAN) in Slalom, Aliaksei Zharnasek and Natallia Berdnikava (BLR) in Tricks, and Freddy Krueger USA and Natallia Berdnikava (BLR) again in Jump. The Overall title holders Adam Sedlmajer (CZE) and Natalia Berdnikava (BLR) will also defend these titles. However, just today, Nate Smith (USA) had a new World Slalom record of 2.5 buoys on the 9.75m line approved, Erika Lang USA had a new World Tricks Record approved last week of 10,180 points and Regina Jaquess (USA) set the Women’s World Slalom Record in July of 3.5 buoys on the 10.25m line. None of these is a current World Champion. In other words, the reigning World Champions will have a very tough job to hang on to those medals! This will make it a fascinating event and one not to miss on the live Webcast.
The President of the Chilean Olympic Committee, Mr Nevin Ilic, will be on site to witness what promises to be a very exciting World Championships. Also on site will be the latest inductees to the International Hall of Fame – Lucky Lowe (USA), Nadine de Villiers (RSA), Bill Bowness (USA) and Ron Fergusson (AUS). Their inauguration will be on Thursday in Santiago.

One of the world’s most beautiful Waterski arenas, Lago los Morros, is located on the outskirts of Santiago in Chile and is already buzzing with anticipation. Running for five days from November 26, the IWWF World Waterski Championships will be staged for the first time in Chile at this well proven site. The manmade lake is as close to perfect as is possible and with sunny 23C / 74Fh weather predicted and a water temperature also of 23C, the stage is now set for a truly spectacular event.
http://www.sportcal.com/images/others/iwsf/2013_24_01.jpghttp://www.sportcal.com/images/others/iwsf/2013_24_02.jpgAt this time, athletes from 34 countries have entered the start list. These include Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, France, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Russia, Slovakia, Republic of South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Uruguay and USA. Once again, the two largest squads are from the USA and France with 17 and 15 athletes each. They are also the countries which have won the most gold medals over the years. USA has taken home 149 and France 28. MasterCraft will provide the official boats and technical support.
Untypically, every gold medalist from the previous 2011 World Waterski Championships in Dubna Russia will now compete at Lago los Morros to defend their titles. Thankfully, injuries have not kept them away. Certainly, each will be under enormous pressure from the impressive talent rising through the ranks at this time.
To add to http://www.sportcal.com/images/others/iwsf/2013_24_04.jpgexpectations http://www.sportcal.com/images/others/iwsf/2013_24_03.jpgahead, three World Records have fallen in the past five months. One strong gold medal contender, Nate Smith USA, has climbed in Men’s Slalom from Rank No. 20 to No.3 in just three years. He has already equaled the World Record and also has an additional pending World Record of 2.5 buoys on the 9.75m line. In Women’s Slalom, multi-talented Regina Jaquess USA is also chasing gold. She too set a new World Slalom Record four months ago of 3.5 buoys on the 10.25m line. The 18 year-old sensation Erika Lang USA set a new Tricks World Record of 10,180 points which was approved just last week. Watch out defending champions ! OTTAWA - For the first time since 1993, Team Canada at the World Water Ski Championships will not include Jaret Llewellyn. After over a year of intense rehabilitation, Llewellyn suffered a setback in training that will keep him out of the World Championships in Santiago, Chile.
“Jaret has been an incredible leader both on and off the water” said National Team Head Coach Steve Bush. “Both in terms of his leadership and his performance on the water, there really is no replacing an athlete like Jaret. Even in the past few weeks, Jaret has inspired the rest of the team with an incredible work ethic. He has left no stone unturned in his rehab efforts”.
Over the course of an incredible career to date, Llewellyn has captured 12 world championship medals, including 7 golds. In addition to the Worlds hardware, Llewellyn also has 6 Pan American Games medals (4 Gold, 2 Silver) and the honour of being Canada’s flag bearer at the 2007 Opening Ceremonies to his credit. “For going on twenty years now, all of Canadian sport has been inspired by Jaret as an athlete, a leader and an innovator in our sport. We fully expect that we will continue to be inspired by Jaret as he continues his preparation for the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto” said Water Ski and Wakeboard Canada CEO David Patterson.
Taking on the task of replacing Llewellyn will be Belleville Ontario’s Neilly Ross. Ross, at the tender age of 13 has already achieved great heights so far this season. Ross started the year out with a silver medal performance at the U17 Worlds, followed that up with silver at the Masters, and a top ten finish at the U21 worlds. In the process, she also claimed an Open Canadian championship in trick and set four Canadian records. “Neilly really is an exceptional athlete with a very bright future” said Steve Bush. “She has three trick scores of over 7000 already this year and that will put her in a spot where she can contribute to the team score and have an incredible learning experience competing against the very best in the world”. If she finds the enormity of worlds to be a problem, Ross will be blessed with the ability to turn to someone close to her who knows the pressures all too well, her father Drew. Drew Ross has a silver medal from Worlds (as well as three more from Pan Am Games) to his credit.
Team Canada will take to the water in Santiago, Chile from November 25 to December 1. Canada has won 59 medals at the Worlds, starting with Charles Blackwell in 1953 at the first ever World Water Ski Championship.

A few days after I arrived into Australia I got straight back on a plane to fly from Adelaide to Albury, we then drove a few hours to the most remote location I have ever been. We arrived at Columbo Creek, we were surrounded by two massive 100,000 acres farms.
I was there to coach skiing to 18 Children. The weather was perfect for the 1st week, I flew my helicopter as you can see on the video, this was the last time I saw my helicopter. Week two was windy, but the kids wanted to see it fly, I took it a few meters of the ground when it all went wrong.. My helicopter had a mind of its own.. I’m sure it wanted to fly back to the UK. Anyway it took off and shot of in the 40kph winds. From then on I recruited most of the kids to come help me search, I tracked my search using my iPhone, and over 2 days I had walked 40km over 12hrs. We even took all the ski school kids on a ‘ghost walk’ that night, (or maybe it was a helicopter hunt) anyway they all had fun. Unfortunately we didn’t find it. I lost my DJI Phantom and Gopro Hero 3 ☹ sad times.
This video is in memory of my baby…
