Baller Taperflex Posted August 5, 2011 Baller Share Posted August 5, 2011 Reckon how this is going to affect our beloved Zero Off during the Nationals? CNN) -- We're at the peak of the 11-year solar cycle, so double-check your GPS, and watch where you're going. On Thursday, the sun unleashed a massive solar flare . Solar flares can disrupt radio communications, including devices that use Global Positioning System technology, such as cell phones, airplanes and car navigation systems. So if you're relying on your GPS for driving directions, to find your location on your phone's mapping tool or for any other purpose, have a backup navigation system handy, such as a printed map. Even more important, pay close attention to where you are and where you're going. Don't rely solely on your GPS to give you directions.
Baller lottawatta Posted August 5, 2011 Baller Share Posted August 5, 2011 I don't think we are near the peak yet (just my opinion). This was an active week with the major sunspots visable at sunset and three CME's. The solar storm resulting from the CME's hit this afternoon. I wouldn't doubt that those in wisconsin for the bu open could see the auroras tonight if they look north for the next few hours (10-2am local time there). For those so inclined, see www. spaceweather.com (I have no affiliation with the site, I am a just a solar/physics geek) for more info on this week's solar activity. There were reports of minor GPS and communication discrepancies this afternoon particularly with aviation near the poles. I would be interested to know if anyone noticed any ZO or stargazer problems this afternoon evening between 3 and 9 EST.

Baller eleeski Posted August 6, 2011 Baller Share Posted August 6, 2011 There was a big Coronal Mass Ejection. This can cause GPS problems. But I was flying right then with the GPS autopilot working perfectly (at least I made it home). Hopefully ZO has a robust GPS too. The auroras are supposed to be pretty impressive with this. We are a couple of years from solar maximum. It is predicted to be one of the weakest in centuries. ZO should be OK for a few more years.
