So I removed the lower wing on my Goode9800sl and went with just mini ventral up top. Really liked the change . Much less physical effort with the same if not better buoy count and I see more potential out of the ski. However I also took the wost crash ever (for me) off the second wake at 35 (was in really good shape) heading to 4. Tail broke free after it left second wake tip went in and lights went out. Back bent the wrong way bad. One set before that I felt the same thing happen but felt the fin reengage the water and ran the pass. So now I feel like it may happen again. Should I put lower (normal) wing back on and run super shallow 5deg (was 7 but better with it off) or can I even go less? Should I tilts the mini down a few degrees (no lower wing) to hold the tail in place (tail never slipped out in the turn)? Anyone experience this??

"Tail broke free after it left second wake tip went in"

I can not imagine this fall. Are you telling us that you were in good shape at first wake and somehow the tail broke free somewhere around the edge change?

Yes good shape. And off 2nd wake. . At least I think so. Maybe between the wakes. Really don't remember much but I was slammed head first and barried under water. One of those instant stopping kind. Never saw it coming. Thought the line broke. I think my legs went up over my back but with the life vest i did not go down any deaper so crunch went the back. Since everything stopped and I came up (dazed) floating where I would be in my pre turn I'm guessing it happend off the wake.. Was floating inside buoy line and shy of the ball. Like I said the tail got lose in the same area set before but felt it reengage. @jackski sounded like he had the same exact thing with just a Ventral. He wrote "Second set I decided all was well so I put a little more into it. Bad mistake, OTF on the second wake, reinjured sholder and tore my vest a new armhole" .....sounds like he skipped a little more but not much. Almost didn't post question because of such an odd fall.

I removed my ventral this week and put the stock fin to 9. It carries much more speed into and out of the ball but still cranks a turn. Ski was biting too much as the water warmed up even with the stock wing at 7.

Only been off a few sets, we will see how it does at Nats tomorrow.

What about rather than taking the regular lower wing off completely, how about replacing it with a smaller (mini) wing? You'd still have the bite and added stability of the lower rear wing, just much less pronounced. Might keep the tip from digging? Anyone tried that yet?

Ed,

The Regular size Ventral works great in the rear position. Much less drag than the standard wing. Place it wings up at 7 to 8 degrees first. If you want it to feel like no wing at all and still increase turning and tracking capability, then place it wings down at zero to 2 degrees. Stops the OTF problem talked about earlier.

are you just BS ing about neg wing angle? I'm playing with a ventral on 64 Goode WR. Best set up so far is ventral level and schnitz mini wing at 10 degrees. Prior set up was a regular size wing at 8 degrees.
