Baller aswinter05 Posted February 1, 2013 Baller Share Posted February 1, 2013 Made a similar post on Planet Nautique a bit ago.... It's time to SN shop before spring. Really interested in the newer 200's (OB). Also kinda interested in a 2008 or 2009 196 if it's at the right price. I've got at least 3 months to shop around so I'm in no rush to make a purchase just yet. When it comes to a 200, I'm sorta confused on some of the options and whether or not they are necessary. For instance, I heard after January 2011(ish), SN had to start making all the 343's with Cat Converters. What does this mean about the engines that DO NOT have the Cat Converters in 2010? Do they still perform the same way? Is a converter supposed to be installed in order to be "legal"? I'm also trying to decide if it's worth looking at a Team Edition versus an SE. Is it really worth the extra money? If so, what features come with a TE that aren't included on the SE. I guess I'm looking for all around advice from those of you with experience owning these boats. What should I look for, and what should I stay away from when purchasing. Were there any design flaws (minor or major) with any years from 2010 to present? The new boat will be on a private ski-club lake 85% of the time (running the course). As always... thanks to all of you.
Baller Kelvin Posted February 1, 2013 Baller Share Posted February 1, 2013 The older boats without the cat converters aren't illegal. Safety and EPA regulations are based on the date of manufacture. Otherwise you are good to go. I think California changed to all cat exhaust a few years earlier so you could have difficulty bringing a non-cat 2010 or 11 into the state. Baller aswinter05 Posted February 1, 2013 Author Baller Share Posted February 1, 2013 @Kelvin thanks that's helpful. I know as much about engines as a wakeboarder does about a slalom course. So does the engine without the cat converter just sound louder and less fuel efficient?
Santa
I got a 2011 SN OB, and decided against the Team Edition after much thought and hesitation. I wasn't really interested in the LINC system, but got most other options that a TE would have. Difference was about 2,700$ IIRC. Never had any issues with my 200, so I can't think of any design flaws. I've owned a 196 (2007) prior to that and at my level (22 off) there is a very noticeable difference in wake. I would go SN200 any day! Good luck with your purchase.
Baller Alberto Soares Posted February 1, 2013 Baller Share Posted February 1, 2013 200 and if your lake is higher than 2400' (about 800m) get the 6.0lt engine.
Baller PT Mike Posted February 1, 2013 Baller Share Posted February 1, 2013 FWIW when I head south to FL in the off season I ski behind a 08' 196 That boat has quite a kick at 32 MPH 22 off. Unfortunately that is where I'm at and where I want to stay for a few weeks.34MPH at 22 is better, and everything after that is dreamy! No complaints about the 200 at 32mph 22 off. Limited time behind the wheel of the 200 but the 196 my grandmother could drive!
Baller ForrestGump Posted February 1, 2013 Baller Share Posted February 1, 2013 California engines got catalytic converters in 09. 49 state 5.7 200's got cats on 9/16/10. The cat engines are a little quieter. If you're looking at 2011 boats, you can find both cat and non cat boats just based on when the order was placed. Prices went up about $2k due to the cat requirement. We order all of our 200s with the Team package. The boats sell better here in Texas. It's kind of a regional thing. I bet non team 200s sell 4 to 1 to Teams in Florida.
Baller lathompson Posted February 1, 2013 Baller Share Posted February 1, 2013 2013 SN200's have integrated Zero-off, so the driver gets 2 cupholders. I think I'll like the Linc display on the new 200CB Team. Seems to work well sitting in the garage :( Hope the water warms up soon. About to modify my cradle from 2 bunks to 4. Trailer has 6 bunks. Suggest closed bow for private ski lake use, unless you have a large family and/or need to take out more than 4-5 people at a time. Closed bow observer seat easily accommodates 3 people; OB version barely seats 2. Loved my 2006 196 limited, but expecting great pulls from the new boat. Baller aswinter05 Posted February 1, 2013 Author Baller Share Posted February 1, 2013 That's good to hear about the cat converters. I'll do my best not to let a salesman sell me a 200 for $2K more just because of the cat upgrade. Also, I believe there is some kind of "protection material" that's installed above the transom and on both sides of the rear catwalk (near the engine vents). I guess it helps protect the gelcoat against ski rops and ski edges. I have no idea what it's called. Is this material installed on all 200 models or is it only on the Team Editions? This seems like a beneficial component to have on a boat
Baller ForrestGump Posted February 1, 2013 Baller Share Posted February 1, 2013 It's not a cat upgrade. It's a cat mandate. Dealers had no choice. Manufacturing costs at PCM went up $1500 which are then passed to CC, which are then passed to the dealer which are then passed to the consumer. It is what it is and is part of the price of the boat as a whole. And not just 200s. Every new inboard and inboard/outboard in the US is required to have cats now. You are talking about 3m protective film. It does not come from the factory on any models, be it standard or team. Owners who have it, have done it themselves or the dealer has done it for them. Baller swc5150 Posted February 1, 2013 Baller Share Posted February 1, 2013 I think clemsondave has a 200 pattern for the 3M protective film?
