Turn & Burn ?

I am posting here because, I cannot post a reply in advanced topics, I recently had a session, with a slalom skier, who must be respected by most people all over the world, he explained to me that because of five bladed props, big engines and zero off, you can no longer wait for the pull of the boat to pick you up.

He said he would like me too approach the bouy line, look at right angles, then turn & burn, quite different to what I had been working on, but does get you up in front of the bouys, he also said that I was generating a lot of speed, but that was a good thing.

I may have mis-interpreted this, but there was no critcism when I done it.

Simple and not complicated, no talk of when or how to load, is it the way to go ?

@OB Ok so I am tired and not right on it, the first sentence is right in both aspects, the knowledge and experience of this person must be second to none, I would be amazed if most people in the sport did not respect this person, there maybe some that do not

I have never seen a five bladed prop, but apparently they are coming.

As for the other sentence, basically, I was waiting for the ski to finish the turn and then go, he wanted me to go as soon as I got to the bouy line.

Sorry ! I have obviously got under your skin, I do not claim to be perfect, I shall crawl back into my hole and not say another word.

@stevie boy I'm not respected by much anyone, but can say I used to try to turn and burn at 90 degrees angle back in the hand drive and PP days...I was also a physical brute back then and it covered up a lot of bad technique for me. I can't ski that way behind ZO...maybe your coach can do so.

Big turn, 90 degree pull and ZO spanks me with throttle resulting in overload and then early but fast/narrow to the next buoy which for me is terribly problematic. I've really changed how I ski to be more efficient and it's paid off for me.

Stay out of your hole and post any questions you want :)

Personally, I find it hard to react to unnamed expert advice. Knowing who it is can be tremendously helpful in discerning the underlying intent.

If I assume this guy is indeed an expert coach, then my best guess would be that this advice is specialized toward helping you overcome something specific that you are doing. Some skiers seem to have a big hesitation at the finish of the turn, and maybe he's helping you to avoid that or something similar.

If it's working, do it! But I believe most people would get into worse trouble thinking this way -- I basically echo 6balls' comments.

@than_bogan that is very true. If I'm watching s'one again and again not take enough out of the ball, I may eventually say "here's the deal...I want you 90 degrees cross course off the ball" hoping that I can get them to 45 degrees. Very good insight there Mr. Bogan.

@ShaneH, Yep I think you are right, thats why I was asking the question, I was surprised when it was suggested that I should turn and burn, I guess I interpreted it the wrong way, probably what he was saying was, turn and go, subtitle difference.

@ShaneH, go buy a ski from him you will love it.
