Baller ScarletArrow Posted August 30, 2013 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2013 Many of the regular tournaments in Ohio allow for turn and burn. Personally, I don't like the format because it allows people early in the running order to skip out after their second round. This really puts pressure on the remaining officials who are skiing in the later groups. Also, many people end up going back to their original starting pass on the turn and burn which makes the second round extremely long. I almost always take a 3rd round because I want to start fresh and with a clear mind and get my money's worth in number of passes. How about you? Baller jayski Posted August 30, 2013 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2013 when there are 'turn & burn' events here it is usually stipulated that you can only go back one pass or even only rerun the failed pass to expedite the event
Gold Member Than_Bogan Posted August 30, 2013 Gold Member Share Posted August 30, 2013 Not quite "always." If horrible weather is coming and the organizers have requested everyone turn and burn, I will. But what I've learned about myself since this rule came into existence is that I value having another chance "in inventory." I want look forward to an entire tournament round later. If I ski something amazing (e.g. my lifetime best was in round 2 of a turn-and-burn-option), then I'm gonna be mentally and physically exhausted. If I ski something horrible, even a M.O.P., I want to take the time to clear my head and start over fresh. If I ski something "normal" it doesn't seem to quite work out. Say a 1.5 @ -38, a relatively common score for me. Although I know I could run -38, the odds are very low, so starting rd 3 at -38 makes no sense: I might score a 4 or 4.5 and be totally bummed that it didn't count. So I could go back to -35. But now by the time I reach my second -38, I'm attempting my 6th pass. While I routinely do 6 or 8 in practice, I use a lot more energy per pass in a tournament, so that probably doesn't set me up for my best chance. The one place where I'd seriously consider it would be if I ran very deep on my reach pass. For example, suppose I got 4.5 @ -38. Now I might just go ahead and try it again (as rd 3). If I don't complete it, then oh well I still got a very good score for me. And if I get any further than 4.5, I'm awfully likely to complete it, and thus get credit for it. Baller jwr Posted August 30, 2013 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2013 I only turn and burn if I'm pissed off. I ski tentative in tournaments sometimes and little anger helps.
Baller BRY Posted August 30, 2013 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2013 I have only skied one T&B, but almost everyone did the T&B. 3 rounds, first round standard mandatory. 2nd round option to do T&B, not required. T&B round (3rd) could be any line/speed, just gotta make that pass for credit on those before as normal. Seemed most liked to T&B because already in the water, all warmed up, ready to go. 3-4 passes didn't seem to get anyone gassed. Not sure it made it any faster, maybe. I wasn't sure what I was going to do. Had a decent 1st round, then ended up mopping 2nd round, so T&B'd it. Was ready to go, my opener usually is not a problem, and didn't want to dwell on it. Came back with a 5@35 which is solid for me.
Baller GAJ0004 Posted August 31, 2013 Baller Share Posted August 31, 2013 It does not work for me. It is just a waste of a round for me. I have only tried it once..

Baller 6balls Posted August 31, 2013 Baller Share Posted August 31, 2013 I only ski one with a T and B option. The sunlight is terribly difficult in rnd 3. At 38 the spray coming off the back of the boat out of 1 ball is blinding and then one's pupils have no time to adjust to see 2 ball in the shade. In that tourney I run round 1 normal, and in rnd 2 typically turn n burn. Last yr that meant going back in at 35 but it went fine. I was also then done earlier in the day with less rounds on my body given it's a 6 round double over Sat/Sun. It also meant I could wander up to a tower, judge a bit, then grab a cocktail and watch most of round 3 shooting the bull with skiers. 3 rounds one day only, no way I turn and burn unless the visibility issue or some other issue as mentioned. The other reason to turn n burn would be ideal wind conditions to run one's best pass that are likely to change by the next round...or if one needs to leave a tourney early for other commitments. I like the option for all of those reasons. No obligation to take it.
Baller jedgell Posted August 31, 2013 Baller Share Posted August 31, 2013 Just skied my first turn and burn last weekend. I liked it, gave me another chance at my hardest pass. We had a traditional 3 round on Sat , got done at 5:15. Sunday with the T&B we finished at 2:30. Most if the skiers improved their score on the T&B. it's a nice option to have for people that travel several hours, and it mixes things up a little. I think we had 3 or 4 skiers that didn't T&B. ran a quick 3rd round for them.
Baller jipster43 Posted August 31, 2013 Baller Share Posted August 31, 2013 I skied a turn and burn in which everyone left early on Sunday and we became pretty tight for judges by the third round. It worked out in the end and it was nice to end a little early. Those of us who stayed to ski our third round had a great time!
Baller ForrestGump Posted August 31, 2013 Baller Share Posted August 31, 2013 I've taken turn and burn 11 times in the last 3 years. Out of that, I've only scored better in one round. I will rarely take the option now days.
Baller 6balls Posted August 31, 2013 Baller Share Posted August 31, 2013 @shane you would have to run a comparison to how often your 3rd rnd in a 3 rnd tourney beats your second do directly compare. I know by round 3 sometimes the old bod is out of gas...I tend to run better early.
Baller GAJ0004 Posted September 2, 2013 Baller Share Posted September 2, 2013 At the Dave's Pond Labor Day (sunday)slalom tournament I tried an experiment in my 3rd round. I started off the dock at 28off, and ended up running 2 1/2@32off which was my best run of the day. There is a tournament in Ohio next Sunday at Bellalago Lake in Leavittsburg OH. Round 1 I am going to start at 15off, round 2 start at 22 off, and round 3 28off to see how I do. It looks like round 2-3 will be a mandatory turn and burn due to limited daylight. I essentially did the same thing yesterday except I had the normal time between round 2-3.
