Baller Edbrazil Posted May 28, 2014 Baller Share Posted May 28, 2014 We are losing some of the greats from the old days as time goes on. I just found out that Warren Witherell recently died at age 79. This is his biography for his Hall of Fame induction in 1984: http://www.waterskihalloffame.com/Halloffame/warren-witherel-l1984-hof.html The only person to be elected to both snow and water Halls of Fame. Baller A_B Posted May 28, 2014 Baller Share Posted May 28, 2014 Thanks for posting Ed. I have lost touch with the old NY skiing group and had not heard of this. I was lucky enough to ski with Warren on Lake Newcomb and in Galway a few times with his good mutual friend Allen Cerasani in the late 1980's. I don't think he was actively competing at the time, but made 38 off look like a cake walk. Amazing skier. RIP Warren.

PatRe
I didn't get to know Mr. Witherell but do remember watching him ski and being one of the first guys to make it really look easy. He gave us a great slalom clinic between rounds at a John's Lake tournament in the 80's. A true ambassador for the sport!

Baller jimbrake Posted May 28, 2014 Baller Share Posted May 28, 2014 Such a bummer. I was really influenced by Mr. Witherell first as a snow skier when I read his 1972 book: How the Racers Ski. That was a very influential book in ski racing circles. He brought the term and concept of "carving" to the masses. No one outside of ski racing talked about carving even though skis had flex, camber, sidecut, and metal edges. That book was my bible for several years as a teen. When I got into competitive water skiing a few years later at 17 I was amazed to hear about what a great water skier he was, too. I thought that was so cool that he was at such a high level in both sports - something that is still rare today. I always held him in very high regard and am sad that I never met him or was able to have him coach me in either sport. RIP Mr. Witherell.
