Baller Garn Posted June 24, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 24, 2014 I figured that title would get your attention. Here's my problem, some of the screws on my boat trailer that hold the wooden planks down (the planks that the boat sits on) are getting stripped. Last night I crawled under my boat to tighten them after seeing some of them half undone. Many of them I can't really tighten up because they are getting stripped. Does anyone have any suggestions besides replacing the would? Any tricks to get them tight? Thanks.
Baller Chef23 Posted June 24, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 24, 2014 Bigger screws? Or can you put some sort of anchor in?
Baller gregy Posted June 24, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 24, 2014 I put recessed carriage bolts in from the top when I replaced wood on my old boat.
skosney
Add some epoxy to the screws/hole (same size or bigger) and put them back in. Once the epoxy cures, they should stay put. I have also added some additional material (i.e. small pieces of wood or plastic) to screw holes with the epoxy which has always worked well. The glue or epoxy must be water resistant of course. Baller BraceMaker Posted June 24, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 24, 2014 With the boat OFF from below drill straight through the top of the bunk. In each case when the drill comes through the top, counter sink the hole with a step bit then pound a carriage bolt back through to the bottom and put a lock washer/nut on there. Use loctite to prevent galling. All bolt heads should be recessed into the wood. You should be able to do 1 at each end of each bunk and that should more than hold it. in the middle you can do any of the other screwing around, but really best to swap for carriage bolts. Next time you need to re-carpet you'll cover the heads but that is just cosmetic.
Baller PBD Posted June 24, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 24, 2014 move the bunks forward or back an inch or two and you'll get fresh wood you'll be able to "screw" into.
