In the '90s America's Cup racers used a 3M hydrophobic product on their hulls to reduce drag. Connelly use a similar (or maybe the same) product on their jumper bases. I had a buddy that worked as a technical rep on this product and he told me that they approached MasterCraft about it but the cost was prohibitive. At this time 3M was the graphics supplier to MasterCraft, so that was the connection. (And during this time he was able to leak several photos of new MC hull designs to me when they had them in to measure for graphics, so that was kinda cool.)

The author’s understanding of physics is truly shocking. No question the technology has some potential but the article is just such an exaggeration.
