Lake #3 was the site for some landmark performances at the 2000 Malibu US Open. There was

a high-level TV production, with excellent live boat camera work, plus instant replay.

Home Boy Jamie Beauchesne won the Men SL event. Toni Neville won Women JU, with a World

Record that earned her $25,000. Both Emma and Britta eclipsed the previous record, but Toni

came out on top in a close one.

Scot Ellis had his personal best in jumping: 70.1 meters, which I believe still is his PB. Too bad,

it was just one foot short of a World Record and $50,000. Jaret had upped the WR the year

before at the 1999 French Masters to 70.3m, exceeding Freddy's 68.7 a couple months before at

the 1999 US Open.

Jumping was interesting, squeezing it into a tight site. The distance from ramp to turn island was

initially about 100 meters, which wasn't enough for Open Men. We re-located the ramp about

12 meters back, about as far as practical, but Bruce Neville still ran up on the island. Terry

Winter helped a good bit doing some site testing before the event.

In between the setup time and the tournament, I went skiing (snow!) at Alpine Meadows and

Squaw Valley.

2 years later, the Malibu Open went over to Lake #1, where both the Men and Women jump

WRs fell, to the tune of $25,000. each. That was probably the event that killed the Golden

Goose of jump WR bonuses. Don't think that there have been any jump WR bonuses offered

since then.

Good luck with the rebirth of Lake #3.
