Baller thager Posted January 2, 2016 Baller Share Posted January 2, 2016 Just a heads up for skiers on a budget. My wife bought me some work gloves for Christmas which I tried today. Couldn't help but notice how much they resembled older day water ski gloves. Palms seem to be made from an amara-like material. Not sure how long they would last for skiing but at 3 pair for $10, who cares? That's just $3.33 each. Are made by Firm Grip and are sold at Homey Depot. Come in red, gray, and yellow. Baller_ Wish Posted January 2, 2016 Baller_ Share Posted January 2, 2016 Good grief man..there's no wrist strap . That'll pull right off no? I'd gamble on the first pair that wasn't the right ones. Still only $10 bucks a pair. http://m.homedepot.com/p/Firm-Grip-Large-High-Dex-Glove-3-Pack-3101-96/202203753
Administrators Horton Posted January 2, 2016 Administrators Share Posted January 2, 2016 If you have ever had your glove come all the way off your hand at the wakes... it is an experience you'll never forget California Ski Ranch ★ Denali ★ DryRobe ★ Goode ★ KD Skis★ MasterCraft ★ MasterLine ★ PerfSki ★ Radar ★ Reflex★ S Lines ★ Stokes
Baller thager Posted January 2, 2016 Author Baller Share Posted January 2, 2016 @wish I wore that style of glove for years {60s} when we first started wearing gloves. Didn't come with straps. Never had one come off. Guess it depends on your grip style and handle diameter. The ones you posted look good too.
Baller Zman Posted January 2, 2016 Baller Share Posted January 2, 2016 Compare to the gloves discussed, these are luxury models. But, I have used these and they held up well, and protect the hands very well. Only $25. wakehouse.com/products/accurate-world-cup-water-ski-glove.html
Baller _ lpskier Posted January 2, 2016 Baller _ Share Posted January 2, 2016 My first gloves, purchased at McCormack's Ski School, were essentially rubber infused cheap cotton gloves with no wrist strap or closure whatsoever. While better than nothing, they did make Cypress Gardens vests used for jumping seem durable. Lpskier
Baller oldjeep Posted January 2, 2016 Baller Share Posted January 2, 2016 @Zman the 3/4 finger version of those is what I use. Can't stand the thin palmed expensive gloves that the other guys I ski with use.
Baller_ Wish Posted January 2, 2016 Baller_ Share Posted January 2, 2016 I say anytime we can give someone wanting to get into the sport a lesser expensive option the better. That goes with any equipment or boat. If they stick with the sport they will purchase the more expensive kind. Well done @Thager and @Zman
Baller Chef23 Posted January 2, 2016 Baller Share Posted January 2, 2016 The gloves I used in the late 70s didn't have straps or Velcro that I can remember. They didn't have much protection either.
Baller dchristman Posted January 2, 2016 Baller Share Posted January 2, 2016 Here are some of mine from the late 70s. They're not in bad shape - I really need to do some cleaning :)
Baller thager Posted January 3, 2016 Author Baller Share Posted January 3, 2016 @dchristman My original ski gloves came from AWSA. Sorry, no pictures. Very similar to the bottom EP glove without velcro straps and in pale yellow/white.
Baller ALPJr Posted January 3, 2016 Baller Share Posted January 3, 2016 Second on the HO World Cup gloves. Been in them for about 10 years since they started as an Accurate named product.

Baller oldjeep Posted January 3, 2016 Baller Share Posted January 3, 2016 Except for the boat it is downright cheap compared to downhill skiing, golf, biking, hockey.
Administrators Horton Posted January 3, 2016 Administrators Share Posted January 3, 2016 @oldjeep depends on where you live and what level you want to ski. In the western US access to 1/2 decent water is pretty freaking expensive. I would love to do it on the cheap but that is not an option. That is another thread. Baller Waternut Posted January 3, 2016 Baller Share Posted January 3, 2016 Of all the things I buy for waterskiing, I'd still say that waterski gloves are probably the most budget item I use even at $90 for the Radar Boa gloves. I think I did around 80+ sets last summer with another 30+ runs on open water and maybe 70+ sets the year before with at least 60+ days on open water.....on the same gloves. The gloves are still in good shape with the exception of the soft part on the back of my thumbs where I always grab to pull the gloves off. So easily 240+ times on the water for $90 gloves.... Sure as heck beats a $100+ vest that loses floatation after one season and a $1500 ski that you may be able to sell for half that after a season. Baller_ Wish Posted January 3, 2016 Baller_ Share Posted January 3, 2016 Ya but ya gotta think that someone getting onto the sport or re entering after decades off would be rather shocked at $100 gloves being a weekend worrier or similar. $25 for reasonable hand protection in a glove that will last a good while with that kind of use is a great find. Obviously there is a market for it or they wouldn't sell them.
Baller Waternut Posted January 4, 2016 Baller Share Posted January 4, 2016 Very true. My first set of gloves was pretty cheap from Dick's Sporting Goods and they lasted forever. Then again, I was an open water skier in high school just looking for something basic.

WayneCammidge
Sailing gloves can work out quite good as an alternative.
Baller 6balls Posted January 8, 2016 Baller Share Posted January 8, 2016 I used to get a full, abusive season out of my clinchers. Never had another glove last an entire season. Because of durability, there were economical ie) cheaper than 2 pairs of a different glove per season.
