Baller_ Wish Posted January 10, 2016 Baller_ Share Posted January 10, 2016 So I have a typical gray boat cover. It's under a roof boat house but FL humidity and the fact that it rains sideways, it's starting to get mold. Not horrible but don't want it to get worse. Any suggestions to clean and treatment when it's gone? Also any suggestions for dehumidifing under the canvas. It does have 3 vents but it's as humid on the inside as out so.... Stoner
@Wish here you go for a MI technique for mold and mildew: 1. Dry in the sun with airflow if possible. 2. Clean with brush or shopvac to get rid of crud that dries then wipe down with 1:1 denatured alcohol and water (distilled if want to get to gnats ass level) 3. Dry in sun again 4. Pick a fungicide and apply. I use a 1 gallon sprayer with a wand. 5. Let dry and use. 6. Reapply fungicide as needed. Look at Eva Dry dehumidifiers. I know a bunch of people that run them in big lake boats and rvs in the summer. Should work to get the air moving. I have the original 27 year old cover on my boat. When it gets gamey I dock the boat in the sun to dry out then cover the boat and leave in the sun to dry the cover. Then I repeat fungicide if needed. Baller oldjeep Posted January 12, 2016 Baller Share Posted January 12, 2016 I think that before I tried a regular dehumidifier under a boat cover (generate heat like crazy), that I'd try something simple like a vent with a fan in to aid air circulation. Baller_ Wish Posted January 12, 2016 Author Baller_ Share Posted January 12, 2016 Nice idea but the cover never sees sun. Not sure circulating already humid FL air will help much.
Baller thager Posted January 12, 2016 Baller Share Posted January 12, 2016 @Wish Surround your lift with tennis netting like I did and leave the cover off.
Baller_ Wish Posted January 12, 2016 Author Baller_ Share Posted January 12, 2016 @Thager. I'd like to but the humidity this time of yr with cooler weather makes the moisture stick to everything like a cold coke can in the summer. I'd have to have 10 towels just to dry everything off to use it. We do leave it off a lot in the summer. And I do have shade cloth along the sides. Baller thager Posted January 13, 2016 Baller Share Posted January 13, 2016 @Wish The shade cloth needs to be able to breath!
Baller_ Wish Posted January 13, 2016 Author Baller_ Share Posted January 13, 2016 @Thager it's open at each end and one side is full shade cloth..the other is only two thirds as the roof system shades the rest. This time of yr, everything is soaked in the am for the most part. Cars are the best example. Can't pull out of the driveway without running the wipers. Boat cover is essential. And it's usually damp for hours in the am.
Baller DmaxJC_ski Posted January 14, 2016 Baller Share Posted January 14, 2016 Is the condensation building from the inside or is it leaching through your cover? You could just wash the cover then treat it with starbrite tarp sealer. Link Here

Baller_ Wish Posted January 15, 2016 Author Baller_ Share Posted January 15, 2016 @DmaxJC_ski good question. I see water beed as designed so no, not leaching. But, top stays somewhat damp in the am this time of yr.
Baller Waternut Posted January 17, 2016 Baller Share Posted January 17, 2016 First things first... make sure you have adequate ventilation under the cover. If you've got that covered, continue. I live in GA so I understand the humidity issues although we don't see them quite as much as you guys in FL. One thing that helped me was spraying the cover with some waterproofing spray. In fact, I about to treat it again but I need it to stop raining everyday first. It helps the fabric wick the water away a little faster so it will dry faster. If that doesn't help, a fan really does make a difference provided you have adequate ventilation. Yes you're circulating humid air but 90% humid air is still drier than condensation and the air outside is almost always going to be a little drier than under the cover so it's going to help...a lot! Baller Commuterfisher Posted April 11, 2016 Baller Share Posted April 11, 2016 I recently found that this issue of mold has happened to me. I ordered two Davis dehumidifiers and this solar vent fan by Eco-Worthy. http://www.amazon.com/ECO-WORTHY-Solar-Powered-Venting-Stainless/dp/B00I1D4S9C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1460399766&sr=8-1&keywords=solar+eco+vent I plan on putting the vent into the cover. It runs a small fan slowly constant all day and into the night until the battery runs out then recharges during the daytime while the fan runs. Hopefully this will do the trick.
