How trusting are you with your ski gear?

At one of the clubs I belong to, we have a ski league on Tuesday and bring our own boats. I commute a long distance and often arrive after it has begun. In order to take my turn providing the boat, I have had to leave it at a club member's house the day before league and have them trailer it and start the league. In one case, I was unexpectedly detained at work and missed the entire league. But, it wasn't a huge risk for me, as I bought the boat as a demo/promo from one of the members who was the custodian of the boat for that missed league night. I know how he treated it before he sold it to me and the fact that he still asks how I am treating it tells me he wouldn't let anything happen. So, the real question is: what do you need to see from the borrower to agree to lending your ski equipment?

I'll loan out handles, ropes, gloves, vests and my backup ski (which I have with me always) with no problem. My main ski and my drysuit would really need to be special circumstances to loan out.

The worst slalom equipment I own is between my ears.

I used to be a bit uptight about my boat until the meth heads found me. Now I'd rather have my buddies ding my boat then have some random jerk crash the boat in the cattails to steal the battery.

And it's fun to watch people try my skis!

I picked up an old ski, large vest and keep and old set of gloves in the boat to loan out to people. I'm not too excited about people using my gear so I've stepped up and provided. Like an old friend once told me "you can't have fun by yourself and unfortunately these hobbies we have are expensive".

If they seem competent I will let them drive my boat (with me in it or around), just a few I will actually loan it to.

No one gets to use my ski. No one.

All my other stuff, sure, just let me know.....

I am very picky with my equipment but if I trust the individual and they understand my OCD then I don't have an issue letting them borrow things. Now I don't let anyone borrow my gloves and I cannot think of anyone ever borrowing my ski because I use Fogman's. I only let people I trust a lot to drive our boat, and that's with me or my wife skiing behind it! I think the biggest issue I have is when someone handles my ski to take a look at it. I will hover and monitor how they handle it to make sure they don't set it down wrong etc. My wife is the only one I don't have to hover over, she knows how bad my OCD is!

I'll let just about any competent person pull me behind my boat in open water and I'll let anyone use my gear. The list narrows pretty fast though when I'm not around and there aren't that many people I trust to pull me through the course.

Everything I own is community property. I wouldn't have gotten into skiing and all things water related if it wasn't for the generosity of others.

My boat will only be driven when I am in it or at the dock. My brother-in-law used the boat once and put it too far forward on a cradle lift. The I-beams got the strut and front tracking fin. I was stuck with the bill and only found out when my father-in-law tipped me off.

He will not use the boat again while I am stuck working on a weekend.
