Ski binding inserts, thread type.

Is their an industry standard for the thread type for ski binding inserts? BA/UNF/UNC/Metric/BSSP or Gas pipe tapered!

I have an insert that is 'tight' and would like to purchase a tap (plug tap) to clean the thread. (HO SKI). (It would be nice to carry some spare screws in the ski bag to)

Thanks!

Use caution tapping inserts. I've spun the insert out many times. Fortunately, insert replacement is straightforward.

If you are going to tap an insert, you will need a bottom tap. Or carefully grind most (but not all) the lead in threads from a standard tap. Be very careful to tap straight in - it's easy to widen out the first few threads (and they are the most critical).

Use anti seize every time you screw into an insert and hopefully you will not have problems with your inserts.

@roberto Not sure if this helps but.... inserts are screwed into nylon blocks in the ski. Some brands screw the insert into the nylon after the ski is made. Some put the insert in the nylon before the ski is made.

Some HOs almost look like the insert is untapped before the ski is made and then drilled and tapped in the finished ski. Not sure about that so don't quote me. @savaiusini will tell us if I am totally wrong about that.

8-32 is for sure the US industry standard for skis.

@Razorskier1 every town has a nut and bolt store you just have to look. I go in every few years and get $100 worth of stainless 8-32 in various lengths

Thanks for the help all. I don't want to trash an expensive ski for simple maintenance. The psychological effect of having a screw loose can be very damaging!

Internet shopping next for a tap and screws, I will resist the temptation of the single malt that's close by, as I will end up buying a cnc lathe to make them, or a new ski.

Regards all!
