PhilSymo
I am in the market for a drone.... and was wondering what people have, what people think of them and what recommendations you have. Mostly for Slalom. Looking forward to hearing all your valued opinions!
Baller_ MISkier Posted August 30, 2017 Baller_ Share Posted August 30, 2017 I seem to hear the Mavic is the one. It's about $1000, though. The worst slalom equipment I own is between my ears.
Baller Stevie Boy Posted August 30, 2017 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2017 Ask yourself, how much footage of slalom skiing do you want, do the math,s I looked at it, there are a lot of good second hand Mavics out there, where people have jumped in , only to find out they are not getting much use out of it, bit of a impulse buy. Seen them for $650 upwards. Mavic Pro vs Nice New Shiny Piece of Carbon Fibre ?
Baller Rob Posted August 30, 2017 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2017 Gotta second the Mavic recommendation from MISkier. Full Specs: https://www.dji.com/mavic/info Link to some of Jason McClintock's footage shot with it: https://www.instagram.com/p/BVetdWeD1wS/?hl=en&taken-by=jmacskis
Baller theboardingschool Posted August 30, 2017 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2017 The Mavic is awesome! My first drone. It's pretty easy to fly, has some dummy proofing built in, and you can get insurance through dji for the first year for $99.
PhilSymo
I was looking at this: the Yuneec Typhoon 4k Thoughts?
Baller_ MISkier Posted August 30, 2017 Baller_ Share Posted August 30, 2017 The Mavic can pace the boat (and pass it) in sport mode. That is a key capability. The worst slalom equipment I own is between my ears.
Baller JC McCavit Posted August 30, 2017 Baller Share Posted August 30, 2017 @Rob - Pretty sure Jason McClintock's drone is an AirDog.
Baller Rob Posted August 31, 2017 Baller Share Posted August 31, 2017 @JC McCavit - you are correct, kind of. He has access to both the air dog and the mavic. The footage linked above is from the mavic. Go back far enough on his timeline and you'll see some of his air dog stuff. Some of the footage in there is watermarked by DJI which removes all doubt. Baller ski4xtc Posted August 31, 2017 Baller Share Posted August 31, 2017 The DJI Mavic Pro works great for skiing. It takes incredible photos and with a little practice, the videos can be great too. It goes 20 mph in regular mode and almost 40 mph in sport. When in sport mode, it does drain the battery pretty quick and it is harder to video smoothly. I have had a few problems come up but usually a simple google search will resulted in a quick fix. They are rated to go a distance of four miles but I do not think that is possible. I have made it two miles with clear path of sight and the signal gets pretty weak at that point. It also takes almost 50% of the battery life to go two miles and you want to be able to make it back to where you took off from. Overall, it is extremely easy to fly and return safely. I get a pretty good adrenaline fix every single time I fly it. It was a birthday present which was by far the very best present ever!
Baller Stevie Boy Posted August 31, 2017 Baller Share Posted August 31, 2017 The Airdog looks Kewl, standalone drone Nice! No collision avoidance, so do you put the airleash/tracker in the boat or does the skier wear it ? On the other hand the Mavic Pro has a lot more versatility for other projects as well as skiing it,s a shame it doesn,t have the speed in regular mode, correct me if I am wrong, you will need a operator to keep up with the boat and film you slalom skiing in sports mode ? Sports Mode you lose a lot of the safety features, again correct me if I am wrong, but I do not think it will track you in sports mode ?
Nicad
I have a DJI Phantom 4. Other than cracked batteries, it has been a very good machine. Intuitive to fly, fast, good in wind, great images. Can stay in the air for 23 minutes. Flying a drone is getting harder and harder though because of regulations and air space restrictions. Also they tend to not be as stable height wise over water, so I'd not fly much below 15 to 20 feet with mine from now on.
