76SS
Needed or wanted a fin tool to help with measuring my fin settings. I drew up a sketch and sent it to by brother-in-law who is a machinist. Turned out pretty good and works like a charm.
Baller jbwann Posted September 5, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 5, 2017 How many did you have made and what are you charging?
Baller gavski Posted September 5, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 5, 2017 Looks very professional...How do you use it? Can't seem to visualise it...

Baller BraceMaker Posted September 5, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 5, 2017 Always thought these tools missed the opportunity to have either steps cut in one end corresponding to fin angles, or a separate plate with two pins and a series of holes in it that those pins sat in to set the wing angle. Drop the second plate into the correct holes, slide it up under the wing and shazam. No need to carry a separate wing gauge.
76SS
@Horton nailed it, copy of the old EZ fin tool. Only asked him to make the one but, they have the drawing now and could cut out any number of them on their cnc. @BraceMaker Man do I wish I had thought about that! Administrators Horton Posted September 5, 2017 Administrators Share Posted September 5, 2017 Honestly guys just take your wing off. I do not understand the value. klindy
If you adjust your fin you'll likely need ro adjust the wing anyway.
Baller Marco Posted September 6, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 6, 2017 The benefit I get is the repeatability of the DFT measurement off of the rounded end of the ski.
Baller gavski Posted September 6, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 6, 2017 It is a beautifully designed and machined tool - just be mindful that your DFT numbers will not match any of the 'factory settings' or helpful 'pro's' numbers as they are all measured without this handy little tool.... The DFT measurement is a pain, but following advice from @SkiJay, i can confidently measure and reproduce a constant DFT number.... Just sayin'.. Baller Stevie Boy Posted September 7, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 7, 2017 @gavski true but after fiddling around getting it right, you would be able to re-measure and repeat with accuracy in the future, even if you move the fin fwd or back a few thou, you would be able to return to previous measurement and be confident of where it is. @"76S&S" what material have you used, hope there is not patent on this ? @Horton agree with wing removal, but the dft aspect may be more useful
Baller gregy Posted September 7, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 7, 2017 I have an EZ tool and it's good for quick check just to make sure the fin hasn't moved. For adjustment it better to take the wing off.
Baller Stevie Boy Posted September 7, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 7, 2017 Thinking about it, it would be really easy to create your own tool, just for the dft, now that would be useful
Baller oldjeep Posted September 7, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 7, 2017 @Stevie Boy patents are irrelevant if you just make one for yourself and are not selling them.
Baller bkreis Posted September 7, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 7, 2017 ez fin tool is great, but takes away depth measurement because of skis concave. so you have to know how much the difference is on each ski.
Baller skialex Posted September 7, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 7, 2017 What ever helps tracking your fin is a good thing, I have the ez-fin tool, Schnitz fin gauge for depth, Finamagig tool etc, I don't use them though. I only use a 8" Mitutoyo caliper for all skis, a slot caliper for Goode skis and wing gauges with halves. Fin measuring gigs can be very helpful but the numbers you get are mostly for personal use, can not be shared or compared.
Baller A_B Posted September 8, 2017 Baller Share Posted September 8, 2017 The 2" block saves time so you can ski more! Quickest depth measurement and you don't have to take the wing off. Been using one for years.
