Baller Jaypro Posted June 28, 2018 Baller Share Posted June 28, 2018 Has anyone had a issue with their fuel gauge sticking? The gauge showed almost a 1/2 tank but I ran out of gas. After my buddy put 5 gallons in it, it appears to be registering properly. Any suggestions on what might be happening? I don't have a mastercraft dealer within 3 hours so I hoping for an easy solution!
Baller swc5150 Posted June 28, 2018 Baller Share Posted June 28, 2018 There's a thread on this somewhere here. I remember something about ethanol fuel being one possible culprit? I believe there was a consensus of those of us just using 100% gasoline have not experienced a problem. Others had their units replaced.
Baller ski603 Posted June 28, 2018 Baller Share Posted June 28, 2018 The gas gauges in the ProStars aren't the most accurate. Anytime mine gets below a half a tank I fill it to be on the safe side. The dealer also told me when filling the tank shut the battery switch off and the gauge should reset if it wasn't working properly.
Baller BraceMaker Posted June 28, 2018 Baller Share Posted June 28, 2018 The current vintage of prostar doesn't use a typical sender, it is a Centroid Product that doesn't have a float/resistor, instead it reads the resistance of the fuel between two rods. Baller LoopSki Posted June 28, 2018 Baller Share Posted June 28, 2018 Mine has never worked right since new last year. I just deal with it.
Administrators Horton Posted June 28, 2018 Administrators Share Posted June 28, 2018 Almost everything on the ProStar has a five year warranty. I'm not sure if the gas gauge is included in that but you should just contact your dealer directly. Baller Chef23 Posted June 28, 2018 Baller Share Posted June 28, 2018 Has anyone ever had a gas gauge on a ski boat that worked reliably.
Industry Professional Broussard Posted June 28, 2018 Industry Professional Share Posted June 28, 2018 https://www.ballofspray.com/forum#/discussion/18004/gas-gauge-on-new-prostars/p1 Make sure that you are tanking up with the ignition in the off position and fill it up all the way to allow the fuel sender to recalibrate. Baller ScottScott Posted June 29, 2018 Baller Share Posted June 29, 2018 If you watch the gauge when turning on the ignition you'll see the gauge swing to full extremes then settle at a value. That would suggest to me that it recalibrates each time you turn the ignition on. But we do always have ignition off when filling up. The battery is generally on when filling up, I wonder if there is any value to turning off during fill up also? Just now having our 1st fuel gauge issue, I also sent Joel an email. We'll see what his suggestions are. Our issue is now after 2 fill ups it doesn't read full. 1st time only went to a little more than 3/4, 2nd only going to about 5/8. At almost empty we filled up with 18 gallons, I can't remember what fuel capacity is......anyone know?
Baller LoopSki Posted June 29, 2018 Baller Share Posted June 29, 2018 On mine I have come to figure out where it's at. If it reads past full or past empty , it's off. If it reads in between , it's accurate.
Baller skibug Posted June 29, 2018 Baller Share Posted June 29, 2018 Replaced sender, then gauge, now sender is bad again, over the course of 2 seasons, on a 2015 Prostar. Getting it fixed again. Sort of frustrating.
Baller Andre Posted June 29, 2018 Baller Share Posted June 29, 2018 There should always be a window somehere to visually check fuel level on boats...
Baller dbutcher Posted July 2, 2018 Baller Share Posted July 2, 2018 There are a host of EPA and Coast Guard rules on marine gas tanks (and probably marine industry standards) that make fuel gauge accuracy very difficult to achieve. It's not a simple thing like it used to be. I've been told that gas tanks must be opaque. That likely prevents a visual check of fuel level. Baller LoopSki Posted July 2, 2018 Baller Share Posted July 2, 2018 Yeah. I wish I could at least do a visual
Baller skibug Posted July 3, 2018 Baller Share Posted July 3, 2018 Top it off, ski the first 6 to 10 sets; then add 5 gallons every 4 sets and you should maintain it at about 1/2 full. This is not a fix, just a stop gap.
Baller Jaypro Posted July 3, 2018 Author Baller Share Posted July 3, 2018 I pulled it out after speaking to joel. it showed empty. I then filled it with a tank of ethanol free gas and it seems to be ok now
Baller swc5150 Posted July 3, 2018 Baller Share Posted July 3, 2018 Mine has never seen a drop of ethanol fuel, and so far the gas gauge is the most accurate I’ve ever owned. Could be luck, or something to the fuel thing? Hope yours is solved.
Baller Roger Posted July 3, 2018 Baller Share Posted July 3, 2018 I had a similar issue in my 16. The gauge would read correctly down to about a quarter tank, then jump to and stay at full. They re-designed the pickup in 17 and I got one of the first new ones. No issues since and I can run it down until it touches empty now if I want to. The swap was covered under warranty of course :)
