What is the practical life span of a ski?

How many rides before you think a ski is likely diminished or starting to lose performance? In other words, how many rides do you expect to get out of a ski a peak performance?

@RichardDoane I should have limited this poll to skiers who turn and lean. If you get 500 rides from a ski I will only get 50 from the same ski.

darn. I voted for 200 but seriously @skier2788 is right. 2 Seasons x 200 sets makes more sense.

Not sure I could put a number on this.

@Horton That 2019 Vapor PB I got from you in October 2018 now has close to 200 sets on it and seems to feel better now than when i got it.

I sometimes ride 2 old Goode skis (N1 and N1XT, 2012/2013 vintage) and they feel great.

I think many skiers are onto something new, trying the latest, greatest long before their last ski is "wore out". Others I see are skiing great on skis that are 5, 10, or more years old and skiing great. We have one here in Alabama setting records on a Goode 9700. Could he ski better on something newer? Maybe. IDK.

I put in 500, not because my skis have broken down, but because designs have changed enough to make a newer ski feel better. For me that’s translated into 5 to 7 years per ski on average, or to be exact 6 high end skis with new bindings over the past 40 years.

I estimate I get 90-100 sets a year, I seem to get 3-5 years. Sometime I sell the ski and get on a new one, sometimes I break them in half. All passes at 32 or shorter, at least half at 38 or 39. I am feel that 300-400 passes is a reasonable for me, I definitely pull/lean, and turn just not always well

I should note that I stayed on one of the 6 skis for 14 seasons, a 2001 HO Phantom w/dbl Animals. Bought it new from Spencer’s Training Camp. David set up the fin and I never adjusted it again. Pretty sure that ski will never die. According to Eddie and Wade that was the CDX shape with a carbon top instead of aluminum. And, there is something special about that fin. Last year a buddy called in the evening, had lots of trouble in a practice round earlier in the day then realized that his fin was damaged on a flight. We put the fin from the Phantom on his 2014 HO Superlite TX. He used the same settings he’d been running and skied a PB 2@-35 off the dock at the next morning’s tourney.
