  • Four U.S. Athletes Win U.S. Open Titles

    U.S. water ski athletes Erika Lang (Gilbert, Ariz.), Regina Jaquess (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.), Nate Smith (McCordsville, Ind.) and Zack Worden (Orlando, Fla.) won titles in respective events on Saturday at the 21st Nautique U.S. Open Water Ski Championships at Lake Ivanhoe in Orlando, Fla. Some of the world's top water skiing athletes competed for cash prizes and U.S. Open titles in men's and women's slalom, tricks, jumping and overall.

    Jaquess won titles in women's overall and slalom. She defeated fellow U.S. athlete April Coble-Eller (Lillington, N.C.) in the head-to-head final of women’s slalom, scoring 4 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off to Coble-Eller’s 1 buoy at 38 feet off.

    Lang won the women's tricks title, scoring 9,780 points. Belarus’ Natallia Berdnikava finished second (9,420 points) and Canada’s Whitney McClintock was third (8,580 points).

    Smith won the men's slalom title, defeating Great Britain’s Will Asher in the head-to-head final. Smith scored 1 buoy at 43 feet off to Asher’s 3 buoys at 41 feet off. 

    Worden won the men's jumping title, defeating fellow U.S. athlete Jimmy Siemers (Round Rock, Texas) in a two-jump jump-off. After both athletes tied with jumps of 204 feet/62.30 meters in the finals, Worden clinched the title in the subsequent jump-off with a 201-foot leap to Siemers’ top distance of 197. 

    In other events, Martin Kolman of the Czech Republic won the men's overall title; Berdnikava won the women's jumping title with a distance of 166 feet; and Belarus' Aliaksei Zharnasek won the men's tricks title, scoring 12,070 points.
