LAKE LURE, N.C: MysticWaters Ski & Skeet Pro-Am Tournament on August 22.  Amateur Zachary Carroll repeated his pro-am win from 2014, with Trent Finlayson as his partner. The men’s podium included Joel Howley 2nd, Corey Vaughn 3rd, and the women’s podium included Lauren Morgan 2nd and Chelsea Mills 3rd.   The men and women each took home a purse of $3,000.  The pro-am winners split a purse of $1,000.

The day began with a powerful moment of silence, as Al Weaver, Corey Vaughn’s beloved grandfather passed away the morning of the event. As Matt Carnes, announcer for the event said, “This morning the water ski world lost an icon, one of the greatest fans of his grandson Corey, who sat lakeside watching at most pro ski events.” With great courage, Corey Vaughn competed during the day, scoring a first round score of 3.5 at 41-feet off, and securing third place in a highly competitive field.

Other athletes competing on the men’s side were Tyler Yager, who trains at MysticWaters and took fourth place, Trent Finlayson, Austin Abel, Zane Nicholson, and Tom Ryan. On the women’s side, Nicole Arthur, Brie Carter, and Allie Nicholson also competed.

Both Nautique and MasterCraft pulled the head to head final, with Tommy Harrington and Jeff Gilbert, both world record drivers at the helm. The winning skier from each round had the choice of boat or running order, making for an exciting finish. MasterLine provided the ropes for the tournament.

Along with the ski tournament, the skiers competed in a sporting clays tournament. The combined score from the ski tournament and sporting clay tournament established the winner of the pro-am.  Throughout the day, well over 1,000 spectators enjoyed watching the skiers, visiting multiple vendors, eating outstanding food from one of four food trucks, watching the Lake Lure Cloggers, and listening to terrific live music by Jeff Gregory and Michael Yelton. The entertainment for the day was capped off by Alex the Super Juggler successfully juggling on water skis to kick off the pro head to head finale.

The day was capped off with a barbecue brisket dinner catered by Farm to Fender and Marla Steingberg. The big raffle give-away benefitting Lake Lure Classical Academy included prizes from Race City Marine and WaterSports Central.
