The below wording was recently approved by the American Water Ski Association's Rules Committee.

Rule 1.09C ROUNDS PER TOURNAMENT: There shall not be more than three rounds per tournament unless subsequent rounds after the third round are elimination based or sanctioned as Class X. Alternatively, one tournament may be held with four rounds over two or more days. Also, see Rule 13.01.A.

13.01A The tournament may consist of either two or three rounds of competition in each event scheduled. The announcement must state the number of rounds. Tournaments shall be limited to a maximum of three rounds of any one event on days specified in Rule 1.09 unless using the four round over two or more day option, except as provided for in 13.02.A.

13.02A Rounds: The tournament shall consist of no more than three preliminary, non-elimination based rounds and no more than six total rounds. Scores obtained in all rounds shall be included in the ranking list in the same manner that non-elimination based tournaments are included (i.e. generally the best round score). (or see 1.09C)

15.02F4. At USA Water Ski/AWSA sanctioned tournaments rounds are limited to three per sanction per day unless sanctioned for two or more days.

I am sure this is not hard but .... what is this all about? As I read it 3 rounds is the limit unless you do a H2H or elimination so .... so is this only for cash prize or pro events?

@OB1 You can thank the Southern region directors for pushing this one through. Mr. Jaquess was the lead on this and along with the other two South directors worked hard to make the change.

Funny though how our organization want's to adhere to nearly everything IWWF yet the BOD drug their feet and resisted as long as they could..

@Horton IWWF allows for 4 rounds now on a sanction on a given weekend. this rule now allows AWSA to follow suite and allow 4 total rounds per sanction on a weekend (2 one day two the Next). we used to have to have two sanctions for 4 rounds Of IWWF R&L as our rule's only allowed for 3 rd's per sanction. This now allows R,E&L tournaments the levity to utilize one sanction (Saving the Organizer money) to run the same allowable IWWF 4 rounds per weekend.

@rayn As far as what counts AWSA all scores go towards rankings. IWWF takes highest score from given site for two highest world ranking scores. So if you ski a four round R,E&L event in SRB one weekend and a 4 round R,E&L in WPB the next all 8 rounds will be added to the AWSA Ranking's but only the highest score from each event on world IWWF rankings provided they are higher then what you already have listed from other event's and site's... you can improve on a given site at another tournament at that site. Make sense ??

So..... Are record tournament hosts going to like this? Right now they do have to pay 2 sanction fees, but they get to charge skiers looking for world standings list scores 2 tournament entry fees even when they often only ski 2 rounds each day.

Will there be an option of skiing the weekend as a 4 round single tourney or 6 rounds in 2 tourneys if you don't care about the standings list? (Yes, I'm probably overthinking this)

@Jody_Seal Maybe an example. I am only talking about AWSA rankings.

Go to a new 4 round event. Ski 34mph and score 2@35 and 3@35 on Sat, and 5@32 and 1@35 on Sunday.

The 3 top scores would be counted toward the ranking list(92,93,91).

Currently today if this was 2 separate sanctions on the 3@35(93) and the 1@35(91) would counted as highest score per sanctioned tournament are used for rankings.

@rayn, to my knowledge this did not change anything as pertains to AWSA rankings. All scores go on your ranking list, but only one score per tournament counts toward your average. It still takes 3 class "C" scores to avoid a penalty. Other than REL tournaments, and IWWF lists, I don't see much advantage. If you're doing a "C" as a lot of them are, and want to do 2 days you're better off with 2 three rounders. I know if costs an extra sanction fee, but remember a 2 day sanction regardless of rounds costs more than a one day. (SR Anyway) How much more can you charge a skier for the additional round and still come out even? Some skiers will be hesitant to spring for a hotel room for the one extra round, but might for three extra.

@Jody_Seal to be fair this was brought up several times by the AWSA board (with Jim supporting the effort) and the idea was a concern to USAWS because it would be (at the time) "half" the sanction fee revenue from those 2 round per day weekends - 2 sanction fees. There was some discussion about whether or not to raise the sanction fees for "4 round tournaments". There was even a poll sent to tournament sponsors from the past year or two to ask what they would do if this were an option. Apparently it was deemed less of an impact than anticipated.

@OB has it right in that it gives the tournament site more flexibility to set up and run a tournament.

@LeonL is correct in that it doesn't change a thing for either the AWSA or IWWF ranking list. It's still the TOP score from any single tournament, Which means that for 2, 2 round tournaments you will have (potentially) 2 scores count for the ranking list whereas for a single 4 round tournament you only have the potential of one score getting on the list.

@MrJones also brings up a point where now since it's only one tournament, you might find entry fees going up to make them "whole" again. In any event maybe some adjustments.

Both IWWF and AWSA have specific rules to account for head-to-head tournaments which would mean that some skiers would ski more than 4 rounds in a day or weekend. Generally speaking each "round" in an elimination format must eliminate at least one-half of the participants.
