PJ
Here are some videos of @MS and myself testing the GoPro pylon camera mount that I made out of 3" PVC for a total of $14 (with tax). Not sure how this compares with the $250 Wakeye. But, for the money, it seems to have turned out pretty good. http://youtu.be/kr2vXenRo-M and http://youtu.be/Gfwp6xMYeNE
Baller oldjeep Posted June 13, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 13, 2014 Looks like it works just fine. Funny thing is that it seems to have almost no vibration when compared to the P3 Trakker video that I've shot. Care to share the construction? PJ
i'll post some pics later today of the mount itself. left it in the boat.
Baller_ Wish Posted June 13, 2014 Baller_ Share Posted June 13, 2014 PJ, looks great!!. GoPo's have a bit of a distance problem though. Needs to be closer. Can another camera be mounted to it that has a zoom? All these devices have vibration. Impossible to illuminate but that video looks as good as anything I've seen or watched of the ones I've built. Will be in Southern Canada July 2nd-8th. You can experiment with it one me =)
Baller skier2788 Posted June 13, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 13, 2014 Definitely check settings on the gopro. When a I take videos with mine it seems slightly more zoomed in than that. Looks great will be interested in seeing pictures of it.

ALTHOUGH I THINK YOURS MOVES SMOOTHER ACROSS THE WAKE! Maybe that is all in the skiing???!!!
Baller DanE Posted June 14, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 14, 2014 It is a wide lens, vibrations does not show up much as compared to a zoomed in view.
SM
If you shoot at 4k you can zoom in to a reasonable size without any pictue loss if you edit in 720 or 1080.
Baller SkiJay Posted June 14, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 14, 2014 @PJ if your GoPro is a Hero 2 or later, shoot at the highest resolution and in "narrow" mode.

Baller foxriverat Posted June 14, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 14, 2014 Interested to see pictures and how you made it with the 3 inch pvc. I was at home depot last week looking for 2 1/2 inch pvc to make one. You have to special order 2 1/2 I looked at the 3 inch and it looked gigantic. Baller jhughes Posted June 16, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 16, 2014 We use a PVC mount as well, it works incredibly well.
skibumm
Here is the one I use and I have it set up for an Iphone with Wakeye app. I went with the different setup as the top of my pylon is smaller and it fits in perfectly and is solid as can be. I can also move it to the tower too and works good there as well.
Baller Lieutenant Dan Posted June 16, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 16, 2014 @skibumm What is the mount that you use / where did you get it from? Which iPhone do you use?
giddyup
What size are you using for PVC pipe. 2.5 or 3"
Baller davemac Posted June 16, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 16, 2014 I've made a few of these things. Its pretty simple. The key is getting the right width of the "groove" that the rope rides in. It needs tension to move properly with the rope, and varies some by the type of pylon and also type of rope (knotless don't work as well). The few I've made have a piece of slightly oversized Styrofoam noodle stuffed inside to help dampen the vibration.
Baller davemac Posted June 17, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 17, 2014 Here is another shot that shows a couple different ideas for the "cap" if you want to use bungee to fasten an iPhone down, etc. Also, you can see the "noodle" that goes inside the cap
PJ
@giddyup i'm using a 3" dia. PVC. The pylon on our 196 is 2.5" so I wanted it to be able to rotate easily. The key is definitely the width of the slot as @davemac mentioned. Mine is just wide enough so that it gently squeezes the loop over the pylon. skibumm
@Lieutenant Dan I used a gopro mount that I purchased from best buy for $12.00. It is the misc parts. The only issue is you have to modify it to connect two mounts together. I used a flat mount for the phone part and a helmet mount for the top of the PVC cap. I am using an iphone 5 with it with some velcro on the case of the phone to attach it to the mount. I sued it at lake powell on both the pylon and my tower and it worked great. Baller jhughes Posted June 17, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 17, 2014 Hint, electrical supply houses sell 2.5" PVC conduit. A snug fit to the pylon is a difference maker.
Baller matthewbrown Posted June 17, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 17, 2014 If I'm looking at these correctly, I assume to change the rope you have to lift the apparatus completely off and then put back on once the change is made?
skibumm
@matthewbrown Yes that is correct.
Baller DaveD Posted June 18, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 18, 2014 Has anyone tried adding soft foam inside the pipe to reduce the vibration?
Baller Ed_Obermeier Posted June 19, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 19, 2014 I use one that @davemac built for me (Thanks again Dave!) and it works great. What I did was to take two of the thin soft koozies and cut the bottoms out, fit them over each other on the pylon inside the PVC mount. Works like a charm with my Kodak ZX5 Playsport, takes the vibration out and still rotates properly.
DaveSN
You can get the 2.5 PVC from electrical supply houses. I glued some 1/4 flat PVC to the top to mount the camera. Added bonus is it won't roll off the dock. Heat it in boiling water then put it over the pylon, rotate it while it cools to get the fix right. Should be snug. Adjust as needed. The hole in the side is so you can see that the rope is on the pylon. This one is for a Malibu so it's kind of long. It takes great videos.
