Polishing ski surface.

40 grit!

 

The texture on the bottom does matter. But too smooth might not be best. Many factory skis came with a fair amount of texture. Polishing is more different from your original ski than wallboard texture. @Horton‌ is right, don't mess with a ski that is working. If it's not working, I'd add a fairly rough sanded finish way before polishing.

 

I actually do texture with 40 grit. My texture fades noticeably and the retexture does improve the feel.

You can cover scratches sand them and spray the bottom with Black SEM Clasic Coat (or any other Clasic Coat colour you like). If there are no scratches you can use clear coat. Wash it with soap and scotchbrite sponge and you'll have a really nice newish bottom ski!
