Yesterday in the middle of our sets , it only clacked and chattered when trying to start .... Possible low voltage or solinoid ? Thanks
Baller A_B Posted September 27, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 27, 2015 You can remove it and take to Autozone for testing. Just don't use any non-marine starter parts.
Baller GOODESkier Posted September 27, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 27, 2015 Double what @A_B said. Marine starter/parts cost more, but they are necessary for the safety you want!
Baller jetpilotg4 Posted September 27, 2015 Author Baller Share Posted September 27, 2015 Definitely using marine parts !!
Baller LeonL Posted September 30, 2015 Baller Share Posted September 30, 2015 Before you go to the work of removing the starter, be sure your battery is good/fully charged. Much easier to replace a battery.
shyskier
If it clicks rapid & not turn over it is a low voltage problem, ck. battery, cables for corrosion. Try using jumper cables directly to stater or jumper box if you can access starter terminals.
Baller_ The_MS Posted October 1, 2015 Baller_ Share Posted October 1, 2015 A non marine starter for the 196 will be backwards anyway.
Baller_ Jody_Seal Posted October 1, 2015 Baller_ Share Posted October 1, 2015 @MS Wrong answer mate! Since the advent of the PCM123:1 Transmission (1989 to present) all Pleasure Craft Marine engines utilizing that transmission are standard Automotive rotation. (left hand). The counter rotation to right hand rotation at the prop shaft is mechanically done in the rear case of the transmission via a set of gears. That is why we see a lot of non marine starters that owners install on their own.
Baller_ The_MS Posted October 1, 2015 Baller_ Share Posted October 1, 2015 Good to know but still dont try one.
303Skier
Are the battery terminals getting hot when you try and start it? Clean up battery, charge and double check. Also check oil on dip stick...is it milky white or brown?
Baller skihard Posted October 1, 2015 Baller Share Posted October 1, 2015 I had to replace my old cables and battery on my last boat. Same thing 04 - 196LE. She never missed a beat and still runs like a charm for the people that bought her from me.
