@Garn with tapered and keyed shafts the taper drives the prop. The nut holds the taper engaged, the key prevents spinning if things get loose. The nuts were castle nuts with slots for the cotter which kept it from turning.

 

Most now replace the castle nut with a nylon lock type nut and as such skip a cotter as youve noted a nylock can back off several turns before it hits the cotter pin.

 

Splined are a bit of a different beast and IMO should really have castle nut and cotter pins but... no one seems to agree.
