Baller BraceMaker Posted December 30, 2019 Baller Share Posted December 30, 2019 Being the dead of winter what are your "top 5" destination winter water ski vacations (we can skip things like all inclusives that have a clapped out prostar doing donuts on the ocean). Baller Cooper_Trelawney Posted December 30, 2019 Baller Share Posted December 30, 2019 @BraceMaker I have to think that Gordon Rathbun's villa and lagoon in Acapulco would be at the top of the list. That would be my dream winter ski vacation.
Baller dbski Posted December 30, 2019 Baller Share Posted December 30, 2019 I'll second Gordon's place, been fortunate to go there. The best low stress/high fun vacation you'll ever take!
Baller NikolG Posted January 1, 2020 Baller Share Posted January 1, 2020 Saint Martin in the Carribean for slalom/trick! www.skicaraibes.com Brigitte and Laurent are top notch and the island is wonderful for families. Ski in the morning and explore in the afternoon or vice versa!
Baller Not_The_Pug Posted January 1, 2020 Baller Share Posted January 1, 2020 Costa RIco to ski with Jim is awesome. Ski in the morning, then a great lunch and then some tourist activity.
Baller BraceMaker Posted January 1, 2020 Author Baller Share Posted January 1, 2020 @dbski is Acapulco too much skiing for midwinter? Don't burn out in 3 days?
Baller dbski Posted January 1, 2020 Baller Share Posted January 1, 2020 Depending on age and your shape it can be. A serious off season workout schedule really helps. One of the biggest problems are your hands. The water is very warm and I've seen peoples hands toast after 3 days, so bad they have to stop skiing. Gordon has Clinchers on hand that has allowed people to keep skiing. Do what ever you can to keep your hands toughened up. I did pull-ups with a handle attached to the wall and no gloves. The best solution is to not go crazy on the first couple days, easier said than done after not skiing for a couple of months. One word of caution, if you get a blister on your hands don't let anyone around you with a lemon!
Baller BraceMaker Posted January 1, 2020 Author Baller Share Posted January 1, 2020 Years ago I attempted a mid Winter Bennett trip. Returned to the tundra with hands toast and sunburnt feet. The feet were the limiting factor at the end of the week
Baller dbski Posted January 1, 2020 Baller Share Posted January 1, 2020 The last time I went to Paradise I was in my mid-50's and skied the whole week with no problem. First couple days only 2 sets and after that 3. Another cool thing Gordon does is having a couple massage therapist show up at the ski site in the afternoon at the conclusion of skiing. Sun is not a big problem as there is a great palapa at the ski site that provides wonderful shade.
Baller andjules Posted January 1, 2020 Baller Share Posted January 1, 2020 TE WakeNSki outside of Bangkok Boca Laguna on Lake Chapala, south of Guadalajara Haven't been but want to try EntreDosAguas north of Acapulco For me, in the dead of winter, I'm just trying to get some time on the water, meaning (a) I'm probably not in good enough ski shape to take more than 1-2 sets (am I ever!?), and (b) coaching will probably be lost on me, because my consistency will be off (hard to work on a moving target). Baller Laz Posted January 2, 2020 Baller Share Posted January 2, 2020 Does anyone know anything about the Catalina ski lake in Dominican Republic? What about accommodations? The hotels on the beach in Boca Chica look a little iffy.
