Baller_ lpskier Posted October 7, 2021 Baller_ Share Posted October 7, 2021 My Nautique boat cover came with the boat. It is in very good condition, but water bleeds right through it. It can fill up with rain water covered and on the trailer in the driveway. What products do people use to convert this sieve into a waterproof cover? Thompson’s Water Seal? What? And what do you use to fight humidity (and hence mold) when it is covered? Lpskier
Baller dave2ball Posted October 7, 2021 Baller Share Posted October 7, 2021 @lpskier I use a dehumidifier for mold. As for the water issue I would look for a fabric water repellent that can be sprayed on.
Baller 2Valve Posted October 7, 2021 Baller Share Posted October 7, 2021 I've been using NikWax products for years on my motorcycle gear, tent and boat covers. https://www.nikwax.com/en-us/products/tx-direct-spray-on/
Baller Windsurfnut Posted October 7, 2021 Baller Share Posted October 7, 2021 West Marine sells a PTEF waterproofing liquid. I've sprayed it on in the past with a fertilizer sprayer. It works awesome for waterproofing covers, bimini's etc. Easy to use.

Baller Jmoski Posted October 7, 2021 Baller Share Posted October 7, 2021 How old is it? I bought a Nautique cover awhile ago and it turned out the coating was defective and hence it leaked like a sieve.

Baller MDB1056 Posted October 7, 2021 Baller Share Posted October 7, 2021 Empire covers. Inexpensive, $180 range , incredibly waterproof, I’ve had the same one for at least 6-7 years, never leaked a drop. Light, easy to handle. Much better alternative to trying to waterproof a leaker. Baller_ lpskier Posted October 7, 2021 Author Baller_ Share Posted October 7, 2021 @dave2ball Does that one work well for you? I bought one and it crapped out on me in half a year. Lpskier

Baller ETskier Posted October 8, 2021 Baller Share Posted October 8, 2021 +1 for Skip Dunlap, but even that cover will start leaking after a few years, especially here in FL. Good news is 303 fabric guard is awsome.

Baller LeonL Posted October 8, 2021 Baller Share Posted October 8, 2021 @lpskier is it leaking through the fabric or seams? Of course, that's hard to determine. If seams, waterproofing will have minimal effect.

Baller LeonL Posted October 10, 2021 Baller Share Posted October 10, 2021 Skip's covers are good, fit nice and, my personal choice is a waterline cover to protect the sides from the sun. However water penetrates mine. It's under a boat house roof, so no big deal. I just can't spray it off without water seeping through. It's getting old but the top is never exposed to the sun. Maybe a new one will shed water for a 2-3 years.
Baller ETskier Posted October 10, 2021 Baller Share Posted October 10, 2021 @LeonL mine from Skip turned 3 years old this spring. Yes the sun was a factor, but it seemed as if it was drying out anyway. Try 2 32oz spray bottles of of 303 over the topsides. Will cost you around $50, but my boat is dry inside again for the past 6 months.
Baller mfjaegersr Posted October 10, 2021 Baller Share Posted October 10, 2021 I have 3 of these units, 1 in the Nautique and 2 in the fish tug; the pair have been going 10 years, Nov-April, in the PACNW. Baller_ lpskier Posted October 11, 2021 Author Baller_ Share Posted October 11, 2021 @mfjaegersr Thanks for the heater suggestion but it’s not recommended for the Florida climate. I think I need a straight up dehumidifier, particularly in light of dealing with a damp carpet and a covered boat. Lpskier
Baller_ lpskier Posted October 11, 2021 Author Baller_ Share Posted October 11, 2021 Has anyone tried this product, and if so (and you were happy with it) did you apply it with the cover on or off the boat? If on, did you have any negative experiences with the boat finish or interior? Lpskier
Baller LeonL Posted October 11, 2021 Baller Share Posted October 11, 2021 @lpskier since my boat is stored on a lift and covered immediately after use, we exercise EXTREME care in avoiding any water getting in the boat. We ski back to the dock after sets and don't even put the rope in the boat until it dries as much as possible. (sling the water out and leave it on the dock while wiping down the boat) This may not be possible for you, based on your specific circumstances. @ETskier my cover is 13 years old. Beginning to get holes in at the rear due to afternoon sun hitting it. As stated it's under a roof and stored inside for the off season. I won't be spending any money or time to waterproof it, as I've stopped trying to clean it.
Baller_ lpskier Posted October 11, 2021 Author Baller_ Share Posted October 11, 2021 @LeonL I have a boat lift but no roof over it, the choice being a lake view or a boathouse view from our house. And we ski out of the boat, so the carpet is constantly getting wet. Next boat will not have carpet but carpet is what I now have. Lpskier
Baller skierjp Posted October 12, 2021 Baller Share Posted October 12, 2021 @lpskier How old is the boat cover? Yes totally agree, about the carpet. I love my SeaDek. In a Florida downpour the boat can be completely dry in a couple hours sitting in the sun. I don’t think skiers realize how nasty and disgusting carpet is until they have a boat without carpet. Baller_ lpskier Posted October 12, 2021 Author Baller_ Share Posted October 12, 2021 @skierjp It came with the boat and the boat is a 2015. I bought some 303 yesterday and will give it a go. Lpskier
