Baller OldGuysRule Posted October 10, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 10, 2023 The hour meter on our 2009 Nautique 196 reached 999 this past week. The hour meter is original and is a window on the larger tachometer. Can this gauge be reset? What are my other options? Have a separate hour meter unit installed on the motor? Have a complete new gauge/tach installed? The boat is a club boat with several drivers and users so it is important to keep track of the hours for oil changes and service intervals. Baller LeonL Posted October 10, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 10, 2023 Does it just sit there at 999? I guess I expected it to roll over and start back ar zero.
Baller Andre Posted October 10, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 10, 2023 Friend's 04 did roll back to 0 and started counting again...weird. My ski finish in 16.95 but my ass is out of tolerance!
Baller markn Posted October 10, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 10, 2023 That is a major flaw in the Faria gauges used in the Nautiques. My 2004 meter stopped at 999 as well. As replacement gauges are no longer available, I simply purchased an analogue hour meter (VDO type in older Nautiques) and wired it. Pretty simple, but major flaw in the original design of the Faria gauges.

I have Faria gauges on my 2002 MB Sports and the LCD hour meter is also embedded in the tach. Until it hit 1,000 hours, it only displayed three digits (999). I had the same question as you. When it hit 1,000 hours, it displayed the fourth digit and and currently displays 1047. It should display the fourth digit once it rolls over. Baller igkya Posted October 10, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 10, 2023 Our 2005 196 SN peaked engine hours at 1,092 on the perfect pass gauge. would be interested if there's a way to determine actual hours too.
Baller thager Posted October 10, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 10, 2023 @igkya Provided the ECM has not changed the total time can be read with the correct electronic reader. Can't remember name of device right now.
Baller UWSkier Posted October 10, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 10, 2023 Does the boat have PerfectPass? I would assume yes. If so, you can use that to track the hours. If that gauge is not aligned to what the boat hour meter says, write down ALL your background PP settings, factory reset your PP, and walk through the setup again. It will ask you current engine hours as part of the setup workflow. Then go punch in your background settings again. You may need to remap the courses, but it's a good idea to remap those every couple months anyways. To see hours on PP Stargazer 9+, press menu and up arrow together, go to System info, then Menu to hit page 2 of system info. Hours should be there. Baller BrennanKMN Posted October 10, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 10, 2023 When my 2007 reached 999 I attached an hour meter to the 12v for the fuel pump. That way I can track maintenance without needing a laptop all the time. Mounted the gauge under the observers seat. Pretty easy install. Under $100 bucks too... Baller rawly Posted October 10, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 10, 2023 All high hour 2009 ‘s have 999 hours 🤣. Mine has been there for at least 5 years. Brennan nailed the fix. And yes , total hours are still registering and can be read with the proper tool.
Baller vtjc Posted October 11, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 11, 2023 @UWSkier I would expect a 2009 196 to have Zero Off, not Perfect Pass. I may have this problem with my 2008 in about 170 engine hours.
Baller OldGuysRule Posted October 11, 2023 Author Baller Share Posted October 11, 2023 To use rawly's response....I thing BrennanKMN....offered the most simple solution to the issue. Thanks to all who responded. What a great site for water skiers and boat owners!
Baller skiinxs Posted October 13, 2023 Baller Share Posted October 13, 2023 You can read the hours with Diacom. You can also see hours split out by rpm band. It is amazing the high percentage of hours on ski boats spent at idle. (Well over half)
