Here is a picture of all the different tails I have tried. It is a fun process. I do all my designs with Fusion 360 and print with an Ender 3 and PLA, which for prototyping is fine, but not for longevity. The Versatail is a great way to customize your ski for you beyond binding and fin adjustments. I know of  a few of us who make our own tails, and we all have different preferences, thus different tails. Creating a longer tail in order to add to the length of the ski is possible, but it won't necessarily make it ski like the next size up. There is too much else going on the other aspects of the ski design. But you can make larger tails and definitely make the ski behave differently. Have fun with the process, there is a lot to learn!20220929_203916.jpg

Thats cool - I had the white long one at the bottom of your picture - I stupidly left it in a hot boat and it bent out of shape 😞  I had one 3d printed as close as I could but it just didn't seem the same.  It felt really good in glassy water but in the chop I kept blowing the fin on my offside.  I might go back to it as it did help me run more passes due to the lift and less impact on the body.

I think all the kids slalom again. The format is cumulative score across two rounds with no elimination.

I'm not sure if I like that format or not, but it does create an interesting situation where Lucas is going into the finals with a six buoy advantage. He pretty much has to lose his mind to not win the event. On the other hand, it is the Yarra

Somebody will correct me if I have that wrong.

    Correct

  3. Hearing rumours Nate isn’t coming now. I’m struggling to understand the Moomba format. I travel to Moomba to have a once a year opportunity to watch the best in the world ski and this year that is only twice on Saturday and Monday for single event slalomers. If they keep this up the top slalom skiers are unlikely to turn up and Moomba will not be the esteemed event many of us think it is. At least bring back night slalom !

Saw @JoelHowley promoting something similar this morning on the 'gram.  Wonder how one needs to adjust fin to compensate for all that extra tail.

That was something different to change from a 65 to 66.  I didn't adjust the fin or anything - just went and skied it - took a couple of sets to adjust - essentially it was like skiing on a new ski.  It does tend to make blowing the tail out easier - I tend to do it a bit in rough conditions on my offside.  Although I think I could adjust for that if I wanted too.

  5. Where I live the biggest barrier to the sport is access to a site let alone access to a slalom course or jump.  It's a difficult sport to practice.  It takes effort - I have to hitch up the boat drag it 30 min to the ramp and back again - if I want to do that mid week it doesn't leave a lot of time between work and needing to get home by dark.  It's a massive effort.  And I'm one of the lucky ones with access reasonably close and a boat.

Boat costs are barrier to a point, but you could find older cheaper options if you had access to a site.

Costs have just gotten insane for (what I didn’t realize had changed) to now two rounds of slalom (comes to around $2000 a round and that’s only if you make the final 😂) Pay has also dropped to only top 5 as of last year and to break even you still need to come second. I can cover around 4 of the European tour events for the same costs and a lot less emphasis on one event so it’s just not in the cards for me this year. We don’t do this sport for the money (obviously) and moomba is one of the most insane experiences I’ve ever had but enjoying a slightly more relaxed start to the season where I can try work on some habits and be ready for May instead! Hopefully next year 🤟

Yeah that's fair enough. I'm worried that if Moomba keeps dropping the slalom rounds (not that they can drop any more - annoyingly there is no night slalom either) more and more pros will have the same feeling and then Moomba becomes a far less important event. Would be good to see it as a pro tour round for points again and more prize money to help cover costs.

I thought more pro's would chase some coaching over here in the lead up (given its our peak season) or afterwards to help cover costs - or Australia need to have some more tournaments close to Moomba with some prize money.

You were very generous with your time on the banks of the Yarra last year with my son and I and it gave him a little boost and this summer he's been keen as so thanks for that.

My understanding about the Poland situation is he literally got banned because he was too honest. He did not actually do anything wrong from anyone's perspective except perhaps in Australian immigration official.

Honest after getting caught on the wrong Visa? I'm a Joel fan so I'm going to assume it was an honest mistake. I think it stinks and yes our immigration department have probably given him a harsh penalty. Most reports I've heard are that the ban was for a period of time not lifetime. All hearsay.

Maybe we could craft a plan to sneak him in via NZ lol

  8. First nationals (Australia) for my son this year in under 10 boys - It's a costly exercise on top of what already is an expensive sport but while he loves it I don't mind making it happen.

  9. Looks like they have changed the format to be only 2 rounds of slalom - one preliminary round on Saturday and the final on Monday (no Semi on Sunday).  They are using Sunday to do "top 10 missed finals" round of slalom.  As a spectator you come to watch the best of best. Not sure if the top skiers will like it or not like it - I mean it's hard to ski on the Yarra so an extra rest day could help? Or do they like to use the 2nd preliminary as a practice for the final - and there is no night slalom so really the top skiers only ski twice.

was it Poland last year who was randomly targeted by immigration at the airport and ejected because a pro ski event requires a work permit or something like that?

I'm speaking from whispers I've heard but I believe yes that was the case, but it was a couple of years back and has been given a ban - just not sure how long the immigration ban is for. It's a shame as he would be a crowd favourite for sure.

Also why isn't @RobHazelwood coming to Moomba this year? You'll be missed.

  11. Would be interesting to know heart rate during a pass - mine clearly fluctuates majorly depending on how bad my technique is on any given pass.  I use an apple watch but haven't bothered wearing it while skiing.

  12. When you guys start talking about winterizing your boat's I know the Australian summer is here! Although yes I can ski all year round - I took last winter off to do some off water training which helped a lot coming back this season...

I am unaware that Joel's boot broke at worlds but he certainly broke a bunch of bones. If he had been in a safe binding we would not be talking about this now.

It definitely broke. Joel has said that several times when questioned about his boot set up and why would you still use similar after that worlds injury. He has also never said he’s wearing it for safety and never advocated that it is safe. Its 100% performance based and he fees this set up is best for his style to get the most bouys.  Can’t wait for his podcast on this one day.

Remember that Joel shattered his ankle (leg?) with that set-up at the World championships

The boot broke at that worlds causing the injury.  If the boot didn't break he wouldn't have had the injury - more than likely.
