  1. one big problem that the world rules dont address (AWSA may, not sure?) is the vertical angle of the camera to the gates. The rule only mentions the height it needs to be, regardless of the distance to the gates, therefore a flatter angle view makes it much easier for the ball to get lost in the spray/wake/trough. Unfortunately another rule is needed to fix this if we continue with this increase in technology trend.
  2. the overwhelming majority of gates that get pulled at moomba happen at the city end. by the time the boat straightens up you have maybe 2 seconds before you need to start pulling out. the current was definitely flowing during mens slalom, the tide was high and rollers do go straight up course when this is the case, as they bounce off the bank where the boat goes close to it. the buoys move, the boat moves and it flows.

Name me a pro who trains with these sorts of conditions? If you want to come to moomba, be prepared to wait half an hour between river closures, sitting in your ski gear in a crowded park, be prepared for the fact you may blow your opener 1st round from a phantom roller, have your gates pulled because the current got you, or have a swan/duck/bottle/trash in your way at one ball.

Moomba is a pro event run to IWWF rules with a few exceptions due to the nature of running a tournament on public water, in the middle of a few hundred thousand people where time is critical. This isnt a gated ski lake community, its downtown CBD. Much of the 'moomba rules' were originally put in place because of TV, however the time issues around them still apply. Moomba was once 4 days of live coverage on free to air tv. There has been years where the telecast was cut during the final jumper on monday afternoon. 'Sorry, cant wait 3 minutes, its news time..'

rules are rules, gates are gates, and moomba is moomba.

  3. Hard to go past Will. He has had a rough time here the past few years and will be out to take it. Hometown boy Nick will turn heads after some average moomba's in recent years.

Who knows what andy will do?! I say bomb out in prelims or make podium. A lot of those lads wont have seen 'the man' at work on the banks at moomba. He had it won before he put his rearfoot in the kicker most years..

  4. the 'worst crash' ie rag-doll off the second wake doesnt always mean though its the easiest way to injure yourself. Most injuries by numbers eg ankle sprains and tweaks, I think, would occur between apex and hook up, so also including hitting balls.

Its more often the sudden stopping than the high speed skimming/ragdoll crashes that does the damage because your body is absorbing more force quickly.

  5. edged 1 was the one that started it all. Then PJ dropped some good ones with some pretty cool angles. I didnt like EIW 2 as much. With GoPros and easily accessible quality gear these days (even more so than a few years ago), it wont be long before someone comes out with another quality production to push it further, eg 3D. Imagine in 3D a slow-mo of asher coming into 2 ball at 41 sending a wall straight at you...
  6. world records have been set behind other boats than the skiers sponsors in recent years. freddy's WR at the masters is the last I can think of.. was karina sponsored by nautique when she got hers?

This issue has obviously come to a head following wills 2 at 43. The swapping of boats makes it an issue for drivers and officials as well - aside from the spirit of competition aspect. My understanding is that nate and JT skied, then the boat crew changed boats to tow will. Expecting a driver to get in cold from a 200 to a TXI and tow a skier the calibre of will is a big ask. So will gets into 43, the first set behind the wheel and unfortunately the path isnt up to scratch and a world record denied. So a skier and driver lose out. I think it would be fair to assume the boat path would have been better with a 200, as the driver would be dialed in, and Will had an equal opportunity to get through 41 like the others before him.

im glad this has been stopped.

  7. Toby Daff - just ticked over 26 :( been here since day 1. was a long time lurker and short time poster at CBR tweakers forum (before horton started BOS). Started skiing more at about age 14 and ran the course for the first time when I was about 16. Ive been a tech controller at moomba since 2006 (i think), and trick judge for the last few. Senior 3 event judge, and drive a few C and L events too. Many of the moomba photos over the last few years horton has used on here you may have seen are mine. I Manage the website for TWSA (think awsa). @horton was bugging me for a few weeks before moomba in 2009 with an idea he had for twitter. The idea being to tweet scores and info. As far as I know, it was the first time skiing had utilised social media to publish scores and happenings in real time... one thing lead to another and @MattP brings along ball of scores!

I worked at a ski shop all through college and now am a practising podiatrist in country victoria, an hour and a half north of melbourne. skied in the states in '06 and hope to get back to FL around the time of nationals next year!
