  1. when i skied collegiately i had many people show up just to support the team and party, but the USA waterski dues + high entry fees were often too expensive to convince a new skier to ski. it was absolutely a barrier to the sport. but there were plenty of people that would have gladly skied 1 event for $20. (wakeboarders tricking, or people who wanted to try to land a jump). convincing beginners to pay for slalom was never easy
  2. Cardinal rule: The site shouldn't lose money and the host team shouldn't lose money. Use young judges willing to camp, or let judges ski in the Class C for AWSA scoring and give them free entry fees. This assumes 1 round 2.5 events (1 trick pass). $35 is a good deal if you're skiing all 3 events! I'm not intimate with the amount of added work, so what's the different in effort (cost) between 1 skier sking all 3 events and 3 people each skiing a respective event? you could have 1 team of 10 skiers skiing all 3 and get 10*$35= 350 for that team ($11.66 per pull) OR, you have 1 team of 30 specialized skiiers each skiing 1 event and get 30*$35 = $1,050 for that team ($35/pull) I always skiied all 3 events so it was a great deal for me, but not for some other people on my team. what if tournaments just charge per event round (per pull?) i would think you'd get increased participation!
  3. when i was in the midwest C's we always had judges on opposing sides so each judge had a good look at one set of gates + the boat judge obviously. down in FL i've been to C's where both judges sit at 3-4 ball side by side and share a walkie talkie. usually one person calls in scores for both tower judges to avoid passing it / feedback. personally i'd like to see separate walkie talkies for the 3 judges so the scores are blind. i.e. the third judge doesn't know if his vote is going to cut someone's gates or not. also i'm not a huge fan of this for class C's Our ropes are right, we obviously use ZO, utilize only the best drivers on site, if possible only use reg or sr boat judges. i made an attempt to get into driving and judging at tournaments but was pretty much shunned as an assistant. i was an assistant driver and judge in all 3 events but could never get any discount for helping out, and had to beg just to get credit for judging... it just wasn't worth it to maintain and i've even let USAWS membership lapse since then. tournaments are too expensive and exclusive
  4. any tips for underwater installation of augers? straight up and down installation as deep as possible? or at the angle it'll be pulling? How do you get the downforce to install? weight belt / cinderblocks?
  5. I just put in a portable slalom course I'm borrowing. We had 3 people and it wasn't too bad to get the arms laid in, but I was under the incorrect assumption that I'd be able to dump the whole course in and pull it tight and be ready to go. The shallow water and weeds would not allow that to happen, so I think i've got a strategy that would work well and wanted to share it and see if anyone else has done it this way: Install gates only from one end to the other, but keep the buoy lines wrapped around the PVC so the "diamonds" are floating on the surface, not 3-5 feet below. Pull that tight and straight. Then go back and attached the turn buoy arms and sink the diamonds and arms. Anyone done it this way before? Or have a better method? The water is only about 3.5 feet in some places so even without the weeds I think the PVC bows and drags in the sand. Pulling tight after the arms are attached sends the course totally wonky.
  6. Alright thanks... Where do I apply for the permit? And do I need permission from the people who "own the lake bottom" where the anchors are? Someone told me I did need to do that
  7. I hope someone has already done the research... can someone tell me what the rules are for slalom courses in Orange County, FL? I have a portable course that I was hoping to leave in on a "public" lake. The waters are public, but there is no public access ramp and so it is semi-private. Do I need permits to put it in and take it out each day? Do I need permits to leave it in for an extended period of time? Thanks!
  8. Is there anyone out there in the BOS world that can hook me up with a lawyer / realtor / commercial real estate expert? I've done a lot of research on local regulations and I think I've got a good plan going forward in my attempt to create a nice ski site. I could really use a second set of eyes and especially an expert and / or lawyer to look at the case I'm making. I've run into a speed bump or road block and can't tell which it is at the moment, but I think I have legal standing to overcome it. I'm playing this close to the chest and don't want to publish this all over the web though so if you've got any info / experience that could help PM me and let me know.
  9. sorry for the left leaning source... one of my buddies emailed it to me for a laugh saying our last houseboat trip bill was 400 gallons over three days.
  10. didn't mean to add the blank option
  11. According to this article american gas consumption / person is way out of control. I'm personally pushing about 600 gallons myself and this is before i bought a boat (so mostly car gas, but i expect it to skyrocket now). where do you fall? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/16/us-gas-consumption_n_4454472.html?ncid=txtlnkusaolp00000592
