  1. I have a question for you skiers in Australia.

My 19 yr old son is doing a gap year between high school and college. He is currently working on a cattle station in Northern Australia (near Normonton). He'll be working up North until about Dec 1st, then will do some traveling before returning to the States on Christmas eve.

After 3.5 months of working hard chasing cattle, I was thinking it might be fun to see if I could hook him up with someone to get in a couple slalom sets. Since he is traveling with just a backpack, he would have to borrow equipment, but he's been working so he would be able to help out with gas money.

I realize the logistics of of trying to make this connection could be challenging, especially since I don't know his exact plan after he is done, but thought it might be worth a shot.

So if you are a skier, live in Australia and would be interested in giving a TTer a pull, could you send me a PM.

Like I said I have no idea exactly how to work out the logistics, I think he is likely to be headed for Sydney near the 1st of December and will be leaving out of Melbourne on the 13th.

    Just a crazy thought.....

  2. First job, washing dishes in a Mexican restaurant for $1.50 / hr. Worst job ever! First exposure to how strong the drug/alcohol culture seemed to be in the restaurant industry. Next job was working for the Forest service, building trails, living in a tent and making minimum wage. Really felt like I was making big money! By the time I was a Senior in HS ended up working for a tiny little disk drive, startup company. 32 years later I still work in the disk drive industry.
  3. Why me?

    - Most of the ballers are too good, it must get old working with all those short liners. Think how much fun it would be to see progress from 34 mph, 15 off to ????

    - I am turning 50 in March, need to make progress toward my goal of hitting 28 off at 34 mph, before I get really old.

    - I don't have the advantage of skiing with other skiers that are better than myself, so I need some long distance coaching.

    - I have never had any coaching, so no time like the present.

  4. I have no chemistry input, but I have to say, that was a very interesting read. As a guy that only skis in a single location, I have never thought about how the water chemistry might change how it feels to ski. Unfortunately, I think all my issues still have to do with the fact that I am not a very good skier....
  5. Like most stories this one starts with the caveat that I was young and stupid, probably late teens, early 20's.

Spent the evening skiing with a buddy and another friend behind my Dad's 13ft boat with a Mercury 60 hp. We finish skiing and putter out in the middle of the lake to watch the sunset. About the time it gets really dark we have a great idea "Wouldn't it be fun to ski at night". So we idle back to shore, I grab a ski and away we go. By the time I am up and skiing I realize I can't really see the boat.

I stay directly behind the boat for a little ways, then decide to get outside the wake. As I am cutting out to the right side of the boat, I feel the boat go hard to the left. Since I can't see much else I am staring at the end of my ski when I see land at the tip of my ski.

I hit the shore doing about 30 mph, flew some unknown distance, rolled, tumbled and came to a stop. Amazingly I had hit the shore on a big muddy spot and didn't hit anything hard and wasn't hurt. Even more amazingly, somehow the boat missed hitting anything. The first thing my buddy says after they eventually find me (a bit dazed and confused) on the shore is "Glad I didn't hit anything with the boat, your Dad would have been pissed".

  6. As a lifelong Coloradan, I can definitely say I've never seen anything like this. Basically a years worth of rainfall in a few days. Seems like it will take a few years to fully repair all the damage. The roads in many of the canyons west of Boulder and further north are devastated. Our particular little ski lake is ok, absolutely full and spilling, but ok. Not sure when the road all be dry enough to use.
