Nick Sullivan
Any of you guys ever use Hyrdrogen Peroxide in your ears when you might have the beginning of an ear infection? Is this healthy or harmfull?
Baller Ed_Johnson Posted November 12, 2011 Baller Share Posted November 12, 2011 I use Swim Ear everytime after I ski to kill any bacteria that could cause an ear infection. Most ear cleaning solutions have a lot of Peroxide in them.

Baller MJE Posted November 12, 2011 Baller Share Posted November 12, 2011 I have. It works great for me. You can also use an ear syringe with warm water to flush the ear and then use the hydrogen peroxide.

Nick Sullivan
I did this once this summer and when I put the peroxide in my ear it sounded like a sizzling or boiling was taking place in my ear. I guess it was doing what it is supposed to do.

Baller Gloersen Posted November 12, 2011 Baller Share Posted November 12, 2011 H2O2 if used with good judgement is a great liquid debriding agent. Some ENT docs recommend following up with an application of 50/50 white vinegar/isopropyl alcohol (assuming no perforations) for pH adjustment and further bactericidal effect. Baller davemac Posted November 12, 2011 Baller Share Posted November 12, 2011 Yup, works for me. At first sign of ear discomfort (often will wake up with it in the middle of the night), Hydrogen peroxide has always helped.

Administrators Horton Posted November 12, 2011 Administrators Share Posted November 12, 2011 Worst thing I ever saw.... guy thought he had water in his ear. Really he had broken his ear drum and did not know it. I poured vodka in there.... Baller PatM Posted November 12, 2011 Baller Share Posted November 12, 2011 I use earplugs for this very reason. Busted my ear drum 3 times (twice skiing a third doing something stupid). The first time I put in rubbing alcohol thinking it was swimmers ear. I remember crawling around like a mad man on all fours in pain trying to shake it out. It felt like someone stabbing my ear drum with an ice pick. So yes Horton it hurt really really really bad
Baller Dirt Posted November 12, 2011 Baller Share Posted November 12, 2011 My wife and I use SwimEar. The active ingredient is rubbing alcohol.
Baller Chuck_Dickey Posted November 12, 2011 Baller Share Posted November 12, 2011 Swim Ears is the best. It's isopropyl alcohol and glycerin. The alcohol mixes with the water, Kile the bacteria and what doesn't pour out evaporates away. The glycerin is a moisturizer.
Baller A_B Posted November 13, 2011 Baller Share Posted November 13, 2011 I come out of the water like a parachute, and usually end up taking a gallon up my nose. Yes I breath out, but still get water up somehow. Leads to sinus infections sometimes. Wondering if H2O2 could be used as a sort of nasal inhaler to kill the germs after skiing??? Baller Chuck_Dickey Posted November 13, 2011 Baller Share Posted November 13, 2011 I use a nasal spray called Ocean. Works great. Maybe try a nose plug or scotch tape like bare footers do.
Baller MJE Posted November 13, 2011 Baller Share Posted November 13, 2011 AB, Try a neti pot with saline solution for sinus infections.
Baller Ed_Obermeier Posted November 13, 2011 Baller Share Posted November 13, 2011 AB. Had that water-up-the-nose problem from the time I began serious skiing, started wearing a nose plug when I get up to fix it. Pull it off my nose as part of the pre pullout ritual (remove plug from nose, pull board short legs down, brush water from eyes, etc). People quit making fun of me (for the nose plug anyway) a long time ago. You can see it around my neck pretty clearly in this 7 year old photo. Good example of poor form too... Baller Lieutenant Dan Posted November 14, 2011 Baller Share Posted November 14, 2011 I am going to have to try the nose plug thing next summer. I seem to have the same problem as AB....no matter how hard I try I always get water up the nose and it seems like I am always fighting off infections. Baller MAD11 Posted November 15, 2011 Baller Share Posted November 15, 2011 My doctor who is also a skier says use a mix of 50% rubbing alcohol/50% vinegar and use it everyday after skiing. The vinegar keeps your skin from drying out. Seems to work, but you smell a little.
Members dthate
Dr. Dave say's 50/50 alcohol vinegar, works great, smell like drunk pickle, chicks dig it. Cleans stubborn waterspots also
Baller MAD11 Posted November 15, 2011 Baller Share Posted November 15, 2011 Same Dr I was referring too. Only real problem is he is a radiologist, not a ENT guy. Seems to be right though as usual.

Baller PBD Posted November 16, 2011 Baller Share Posted November 16, 2011 Rubbing alcohol after being in the water will prevent infections. I can't recommend anything once the infection gets started.
Baller GAJ0004 Posted November 24, 2011 Baller Share Posted November 24, 2011 I have been battling ear infections all my life. I always wear Mack's Ear Plugs when I ski. I sometimes wear a nose clip too. It has saved me alot of problems. I use a nasal spray called 4 Way. It really opens up the sinuses on a bad day. If you get an ear infection get to your doctor. It has happened to me many times. I usually end up on antibiotics for a week or two. The earplugs really help. It has been several years since I have had an infection.
