Quick Reflex Plate Pad Question

Does anyone know if the foam pad/gasket that goes between the ski and the base plate for Reflex bindings is important? I am curious if it is intended to prevent the binding from slipping or the pad is just there to keep the ski pretty when the binding is removed.

The screws in the underside can hang down a bit. The pad protects the ski.

The pad also puts upward pressure on the plate/screws preventing them from rattling loose
