Baller rodltg2 Posted July 18, 2014 Baller Share Posted July 18, 2014 Anyone have a good step by step process to change out impeller? thanks !
Baller PBD Posted July 20, 2014 Baller Share Posted July 20, 2014 It's pretty intuitive. Remove the housing from the waterlines Remove the 3 screws that hold the cover on the housing Pull out the impeller noting which way the vanes are curved Put in the new impeller twisting it in so the vanes on the new impeller are the same direction of the original Clean the housing cover to remove any debris Put it all back together making sure you don't twist or tear the gasket Reinstall the housing on the waterlines The whole process should take less than 15-20 minutes. Best performed on a cool engine.
Baller_ Wish Posted July 20, 2014 Baller_ Share Posted July 20, 2014 @PBD what?.?.? No O-ring!.?. Highly recommend removing entire pump from motor and doing the job on the bench. WAY easier. Makes O-ring and lining up bolt holes 1000x easier. Do pay attention to directions of blades as well as the direction to which the entire pump is mounted. It can be put in upside down and run backwards. Curse Sherwood for making that even possible. There is a drain plug on pump housing itself. That drain plug (screw) faces the motor when pump is reinstalled.
east tx skier
Rod, get a paint pen and make a "this way up" notation on the side of the pump. Also, make a mark across the edge to make it easier to line up the two halves with the plate that holds the o-ring gasket. As with anything in life, lube helps. Good luck. Baller PatM Posted July 21, 2014 Baller Share Posted July 21, 2014 I would check PlanetNautique.com. I found a great step by step direction and it worked great. I'm not the most mechanically inclined and it was easy for me.
Baller jackski Posted July 21, 2014 Baller Share Posted July 21, 2014 east tx skier has it right, get some lube on there (not oil or grease) cheap Vasoline works well for impellers and switches.
Baller PBD Posted July 21, 2014 Baller Share Posted July 21, 2014 @wish isn't an O ring a gasket? You've got all the parts there so its pretty intuitive.
Baller_ Wish Posted July 21, 2014 Baller_ Share Posted July 21, 2014 @PBD yep, same thing. Guess I read you post to fast and was lookn for O-ring. Ooops
east tx skier
On the Johnson pumps, there is a white gasket that covers a large portion of the surface of the access plate. It is certainly a case of semantics, but the seal on the Sherwood pump is an o-ring. I know Rod has spent a fair amount of time dealing with Indmars, and the impellers that fit those pumps often come with an o-ring and a white gasket. So it's not a bad idea to distinguish between the two so he isn't wondering why there is an o-ring, but no white gasket in his PCM impeller kit. Also, here is the step-by-step for changing the impeller on a PCM Ford marinization. aquaskier.com/articles/impeller_replacement.htm
