Baller cacman Posted September 29, 2014 Baller Posted September 29, 2014 Flying home from Nationals, I arrived with no ski. A day later picked ski up at airport, found ski bag damage and ski broke just in front of fin box. I just received check for full new value of ski and bag repair. I did have to jump through a few hoops, but all in all Delta did step up and take care of me, it just took a while.
Baller Skoot1123 Posted September 29, 2014 Baller Posted September 29, 2014 Glad it worked out for you!
Baller Ed_Obermeier Posted September 29, 2014 Baller Posted September 29, 2014 What type bag? Ordinary ski bag, padded travel bag, ?
Baller_ lpskier Posted September 29, 2014 Baller_ Posted September 29, 2014 At the 2013 Nationals, I saw three broken skis. All Delta. Lpskier
Baller Brady Posted September 29, 2014 Baller Posted September 29, 2014 As a million mile flyer with Delta, good or bad, I would take them over any other carrier in the Country. It's tough when you have overside and odd-shaped items. But, I feel they, for the most part, pay up when they screw up. The pilots for Delta are a bit nuts however, especially ones from ATL!
Members Greg Banish Posted September 29, 2014 Members Posted September 29, 2014 I've been looking at getting a new V-type and am planning to bring my current ski with me on a Delta flight next month to Florida. One can only hope.
Baller SkiJay Posted September 29, 2014 Baller Posted September 29, 2014 I read that if you tag your nonstandard bag with "I <3 Baggage Handlers" it has a better chance of getting good treatment than using the standard "Fragile".
Baller cacman Posted September 29, 2014 Author Baller Posted September 29, 2014 It was a padded bag. I purchased many years ago from a lady Buesh. I also had Styrofoam on both ends, towed wrapped around ski, and an old snow ski length wise across the top. Snow ski fine.
Baller alex38 Posted September 29, 2014 Baller Posted September 29, 2014 I use a sport tube ...completely covered in "fragile" and "handle with care" stickers. FYI
Baller Waternut Posted September 29, 2014 Baller Posted September 29, 2014 Of all the carriers and countries I've been on Delta has definitely been the best as far as taking care of me and my bags. Just remember that the vast majority of baggage handlers make about $8-$11 an hour while working in extremely hot/cold environments around loud jet engines. Plus they are constantly being hammered by multiple air crews and gate agents to hurry up even though it's not their fault. To top it all off, bags exchange so many hands that there really isn't much accountability for who damaged what. I like @skijay 's post. Maybe I should put a sign that says "Pay raises for baggage handlers!". Would tips in plastic bags raise flags with the TSA?
Baller klindy Posted September 29, 2014 Baller Posted September 29, 2014 @Waternut not sure how the "tip in a plastic bag" would work. I'm sure the "airserv" guy (or whomever) at checking would grab it all before your bag made it to the secured side of the wall. I'm really sure that guy has nothing to do with damaging bags.
Baller Commuterfisher Posted September 29, 2014 Baller Posted September 29, 2014 Sport Tube. The ski gets sideways on the conveyor and then gets stuck and T-boned by baggage.
Baller Zman Posted September 30, 2014 Baller Posted September 30, 2014 @Brady @OB must be busy flying today since he hasn't taken your bait yet. :)
