Baller tfriess Posted October 22, 2016 Baller Share Posted October 22, 2016 Hey Ballers. Just recieved orders to be stationed at Cape Disappointment in Ilwaco, WA. I am in the Coast Guard and am an avid skier from Wisconsin. I've actually never been to the Pacific Northwest. Wondering if you are still skiing or what your season is like. The station is close to Astoria and I would love to find someone I could connect with to continue to ski. I am willing to drive and reimburse for gas. Thank you. Baller Ralph Lee Posted October 22, 2016 Baller Share Posted October 22, 2016 I'm guessing your looking for something closer then 1.5 to 2 hours away. There's lots of opportunities NE and SE of your direction if your willing to drive a ways...
Baller_ lpskier Posted October 23, 2016 Baller_ Share Posted October 23, 2016 Mint Lake ski club is in that same general area. Lpskier
Baller bigskieridaho Posted October 23, 2016 Baller Share Posted October 23, 2016 I agree with @Ralph Lee you are more than likely gonna have to drive to ski at any private lakes or even the wilamette. Winlock is northeast, warmen is down by Vancouver, there is one out by Canby, wilamette course by west linn. Tough to find things in that area.... Baller jimbrake Posted October 25, 2016 Baller Share Posted October 25, 2016 @tfriess - looks like in your new locale that you might want to give surfing and salmon/steelhead fishing a go.
Baller Ralph Lee Posted October 26, 2016 Baller Share Posted October 26, 2016 Great surfing, fishing, hiking, mountain biking in that area. Watch out for Jaws though, there's a lot more Great whites in those waters then most people realize
Baller BCM Posted October 26, 2016 Baller Share Posted October 26, 2016 @tfriess - I head out that way for work fairly often. Unless you can catch a ski ride behind a container ship your probably going to have to drive a few hours. Hiking and biking in the area are great. A few good beer stops in Astoria as well. The folks I work with out there regularly travel to either Vancouver/Longview or Olympia. Both are a few hours, but both areas have a good number of ski sites. Baller jimbrake Posted October 26, 2016 Baller Share Posted October 26, 2016 @Ralph Lee - hey, don't ruin all the fun. On a serious note - any reported attacks ever at Seaside Point? That is a nearby, long time, heavily surfed spot.
Baller Ralph Lee Posted October 26, 2016 Baller Share Posted October 26, 2016 @jimbrake There has been a Great White attack off the point of seaside. The board was the only thing bit so I'm not sure if it was reported. I used to surf there all the time till we kept hearing rumors of an 18 footer hanging around the area, I don't know if it was true but it has kept me away!! Baller jimbrake Posted October 26, 2016 Baller Share Posted October 26, 2016 @Ralph Lee = hmmm, rumors of fluffy at a popular, localized break. Wonder who could've started that.

Baller Ralph Lee Posted October 26, 2016 Baller Share Posted October 26, 2016 @jimbrake Once your in the water there's something about surfing that makes you care less about the sharks. It's when I'm home in the recliner thinking about them is when I get nervous. I'm the same way with alligators. I see I course up in the Everglades I'd consider skiing it, but home thinking about it I don't even want to ski at Swiss.
Baller jimbrake Posted October 26, 2016 Baller Share Posted October 26, 2016 @Ralph Lee - agree. Although I have been in the water in a few places in the Fall especially that the hair stands up on the back of my neck. Especially when I'm alone and that music starts to play in my head.
