Baller escmanaze Posted August 11, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 11, 2018 Hi Folks, My little 17 yo nephew who weighs about 140 pounds is thinking he has taken Grandpa's 69" P6 about as far as he can take it. I think he's probably about right. "Every time I cut the ski doesn't cut it just slips out from under me and I crash" He's only freeskiing, so all he cares about is the turns and a ski that will really grip the turns. Maybe a ski that rides super deep then? He just doesn't care about cross-course speed. So my thought is that he might like a very aggressive, very skinny skis better than wide skis that are "fast". His roughly $150 price range likely puts him in the ballpark of skis that are 10-20 years old and back then, I just wasn't paying attention to the waterski market so I have not clue what to recommend to him. Baller LeonL Posted August 11, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 11, 2018 There's a good selection of skis on ski it again in that price range, and some less than 10 years old.
Baller BraceMaker Posted August 11, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 11, 2018 I have a 66" D3 nomad I do nlt need
Baller escmanaze Posted August 13, 2018 Author Baller Share Posted August 13, 2018 @LeonL Thanks much for the input, and I am definitely looking on ski-it-again. However, I'm more looking to know what skis were really popular 15 years ago that everybody loved and couldn't get enough of. That way when I find one of those on ski-it-again I can buy a ski that everybody loved and avoid the skis that came out and were kind of duds that people didn't ski very well on. Thanks
Baller escmanaze Posted August 13, 2018 Author Baller Share Posted August 13, 2018 @BraceMaker Was that a popular ski back in the day that lots of people liked a lot? What kind of dough would you be wanting for it?
Baller BraceMaker Posted August 13, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 13, 2018 @Horton probably best to comment as it was part of the ski tests back when they were in Waterski Magazine. 100+ shipping would do it easy. I might be able to scrape together a binding for it if you know his foot size.
Baller Chef23 Posted August 13, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 13, 2018 There is a 66" D3 Z7 for $100 that was a good ski. If you can find an HO A1 or A2 in that price range they would be good. The D3X5 was a big favorite in the day as well.
Baller BraceMaker Posted August 13, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 13, 2018 In terms of Development the Nomad was fairly quickly superceeded. Rc rcx etc. I liked it. Never seemed to dump me in a turn or be unrulely.
Baller Chef23 Posted August 13, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 13, 2018 I am not sure that D3 really had a stinker in their progression. Some didn't hang around quite as long but I don't recall reading that people really disliked them.
Baller BraceMaker Posted August 13, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 13, 2018 Agreed. But the original Nomads were somewhat hit or miss for people. I moved from a 9200 to a Nomad. Being that we're usually on somewhat rough water the nomad seemed more planted for me. I never felt a need to replace that ski although D3 usually has a few flavors in the works and I think people who didn't like the Nomad really liked the X7. When I actually read his post what it reminds me of are Obrien Sieges - those things really trenched the tail.
Baller 6balls Posted August 14, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 14, 2018 D3 Nomad, Nomad RCX or RCX Pro KD CR7 if you want to go back even further
Baller DaveD Posted August 14, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 14, 2018 I would think that anyone here that has a 15 year old ski would pull it off their wall and give it to you. Unfortunately, I gave my X5 away last year so I can't help you.
Baller_ MISkier Posted August 14, 2018 Baller_ Share Posted August 14, 2018 @escmanaze, Goode 9500. Probably 65.5” for a 140 pound kid. Even a 9100 would be a solid choice. The worst slalom equipment I own is between my ears.
Baller_ MISkier Posted August 14, 2018 Baller_ Share Posted August 14, 2018 Here’s a 9500 for $170 with bindings. http://www.ski-it-again.com/php/skiitagain.php?endless=summer&topic=Search&category=Slalom&postid=43237 The worst slalom equipment I own is between my ears. Baller Chef23 Posted August 14, 2018 Baller Share Posted August 14, 2018 If I had anything kicking around I would send it for shipping. I gave my son's old A2 to an Eastern Region skier who had outgrown his ski.
