Baller Cnewbert Posted July 4, 2019 Baller Share Posted July 4, 2019 I'm guessing some of you Florida residents can give me a knowledgeable answer: 1. If a Florida resident buys a used boat that is currently registered in Florida, do they have to pay FL sales tax on the used boat purchase price when registering it in their name? 2. If a Florida resident buys a used boat from out of state currently registered in that state, do they have to pay a FL sales tax on the used boat purchase price after bringing the boat to Florida and registering it in their name? Thanks!
Baller_ lpskier Posted July 4, 2019 Baller_ Share Posted July 4, 2019 1&2. Yes. Lpskier
Baller dave2ball Posted July 4, 2019 Baller Share Posted July 4, 2019 Yes to both. When you transfer a boat registration from a sale in Florida the tag off will charge you on the sales price of the boat. Purchased from another state you bet Florida is going to get the sales tax when you register the boat and trailer for the selling price if the state you bought it in does not. One trick you could do is don’t register the boat until the current registration expires. That may buy you some time and just keep the bill of sale handy. Baller liquid d Posted July 4, 2019 Baller Share Posted July 4, 2019 You pay Florida when you register it here. Keeping the bill of sale (if it's dated) can cause you to pay a penalty if you go more than 30 days.
Baller BraceMaker Posted July 4, 2019 Baller Share Posted July 4, 2019 Does florida sales tax used trailers?

Baller BraceMaker Posted July 4, 2019 Baller Share Posted July 4, 2019 @lpskier gotcha up here we plate trailers on weight not price so I try to get two bills of sale one for the boat one for the trailer and call the trailer as much as possible in the purchase. Baller_ lpskier Posted July 5, 2019 Baller_ Share Posted July 5, 2019 Florida doesn’t have an income tax. They have to pay the light bill somehow. Lpskier
Baller MillerTime38 Posted July 5, 2019 Baller Share Posted July 5, 2019 @Cnewbert glad to hear you are still skiing and good luck with the boat purchase. You gonna teach Melanie to drive for you? Still waiting on my ski to get here in Japan but should be here next Friday and then game on ?
Baller Cnewbert Posted July 5, 2019 Author Baller Share Posted July 5, 2019 @MillerTime38, yeah, skiing 3x weekly, sometimes 4x. Mainly on Lake Weir these days. Funny, I was just about to PM you on BOS to see if you've been skiing yet in Japan. Looking forward to some reports once your ski arrives! I have a piece of property on the market and when it sells, I'll be getting a boat. Could be tomorrow, could be 3 years from now, you never know with real estate. I've been a boat mooch too long. It's time to contribute. Leaning toward a Prostar and will have my first chance to try one out soon. Melanie is all in for one, so that hurdle is cleared! gdetray
Florida boats used exclusively on private lakes are exempt from titling and registration. Get a separate bill of sale for the trailer, if you have one, so you can get a tag. https://www.flhsmv.gov/motor-vehicles-tags-titles/vessels/vessel-titling-registrations/
Baller_ Wish Posted July 9, 2019 Baller_ Share Posted July 9, 2019 "Vessels used exclusively on private lakes and ponds". Wonder if that means any lake without a public acces/ramp? Vast majority of lakes in FL have no public access. Can one insure a boat without a title or registration?
gdetray
I'm not sure what they consider a "private" lake, but I have insurance on my boat, they just needed a VIN.
