Thejad
Hi, I’m currently skiing on a 90s dual boot O’Brien g2 Weapon. I’m looking to upgrade to something more current with out breaking the bank. Typically I go out on weekends, and don’t ski the course. Any recommendations?
Baller dvskier Posted July 24, 2019 Baller Share Posted July 24, 2019 I'd look for an HO Freeride on ski-it-again.com. Will be great for your specific use, definitely very affordable.
Thejad
Any other options or suggestions people have? Usually I ski around 32 and the reviews suggested it was better for slower speeds.
Baller BraceMaker Posted July 25, 2019 Baller Share Posted July 25, 2019 IMO speed is the least important aspect of open water skiing. You will drastically enjoy shorter lines at slower speeds compared to bouncing off those monster bumps 32 mph long line. Of course to enjoy it you need a ski that doesn't stall in the turns. Baller vtmecheng Posted July 25, 2019 Baller Share Posted July 25, 2019 The HO Freeride is a great ski for open water fun.
Baller ejj Posted July 25, 2019 Baller Share Posted July 25, 2019 Radar Union, Katana would both be good. HO Evo, Omni, and Freeride. All good at different speeds for different things.
Baller aupatking Posted July 25, 2019 Baller Share Posted July 25, 2019 Big plus 1 for the Union. It’s a Vapor shape with a wider profile. It turns extremely well, carries speed, and is still very stable.
Lobonator
If you just open water ski, big spray is probably high on the priority list. HOs clean edge on the freeride absolutely limits your potential for big amplitude. Still a fun ski at 26mph, gets sketchy above 30mph.
Thejad
Thanks so much everyone - would love to hit up ski-it-again, but not sure how shipping across the border to Canada would work.
Baller Garn Posted July 25, 2019 Baller Share Posted July 25, 2019 The HO Omni is my recommendation. Just stick with the regular Omni, not the Carbon. It would be a perfect ski for you. With the clean edge technology of HO and HO's unique bottom there is so much less drag on the Omni compared to other skis which is perfect for free skiing because you will be able to ski a lot longer without tiring. Kris
I just bought a Radar Union this year and completed the course for the first time ever on it; all 6 buoys at 24 mph. I open water ski at 28-30mph, and it performs very well. I love this ski.

GZ22
Really enjoying my Connelly Aspect, was very cost effective. Skis 28-32 mph. Turns super nice and crosses the wake so much nicer than my learner ski.
Baller escmanaze Posted July 27, 2019 Baller Share Posted July 27, 2019 @Thejad I believe you may be a very good case study for my position paper I just wrote. Check it out and let me know what you think. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-NiENHZt0sC7WDBaeVk6QK9OJzQ4-DYISGE1h_PPjPI/edit?usp=sharing
Thejad
Thanks @escmanaze great point - I think I fit the first category - love to get low and have hit my chest on sub optimal wakes. Thanks for sharing. I found a place close to me to go demo some skis, so I am heading out that way on Friday. I’ll keep everyone posted on the outcome. And that’s to everyone for the advice! Thejad
Quick update - went for 2 lessons / demo and was able to hit 5 of 6 balls on the course (15 off, 31 mph) on the final run and 4 on the two passes before. I was able to get a good deal on a 67” radar senate alloy 19 - appreciate the advice from everyone!
