It's The MASTERS??? - Bob Marley

Bob Marley (above comedian, not reggae Bob) makes an interesting point. In 2021 the powers that be changed long held traditions about Masters qualifying. One of the guaranteed positions was awarded to a junior(s) who was(were) the previous U.S. Nationals champion. This, and other criteria were pitched out with the reasoning (faulty of course) that many skiers were hampered (by Covid restrictions) from skiing a significant number of tournaments to get representative scores. Enter the so-called LCQ. Always were LCQ's, but now they became "the only Q's" So happens a young friend of mine was Nationals champ in 2020. He went all winter and early spring thinking that he would be skiing in the Masters. Lo and behold, he finds out that no, he would have to miss many days of school, travel to Florida most likely 3 times, ski in April, to have a chance at qualifying. Coming from a working class family who ski on public water and DO NOT live in FL, this was just out of the question. This arrangement pleased so many that it has apparently been accepted as the new norm.

Pathetic and-or faulty qualifying changes or not i can't look at the list of 2022 Master competitors and find many that do not deserve to be there... We even have some representing the impressive new IWWF team.

just did a quick search. golf and tennis professionals do not pay an entry fee for pro events. professional dart players no longer pay for entry to professional events dating back to 2018. Bowling does still have an entry fee for its competitors.

not sure why the multiple LCQ's are so expensive?? will the next year LCQ's be held at different sites? or does Natique have a deal with these owners and the entry fees?

@UCFskier Pet peeve here: There are not multiple "LCQ"s - the definition of LCQ is Last Chance Qualifier. There are multiple "Q"s hence MQS or Masters Qualifying Series.

In both years where the new MQS system was used (2021 and 2022) the 3 qualifying tournaments were held at the same sites: Shortline Lakes (Pickos), Lake Ledbetter (Drew's), and Sunset Lakes (Jack's). All 3 of these sites are affiliated with Nautique.

The qualification process for the 2023 Masters has not been released yet.
