Learning to judge trick

My son is a newly minted boys 4 skier. Being a level 8 skier he can fast track to assistant judge in all events and has done some buoy calling (and has done well) he still needs to learn the jump portion but he is in no way ready to judge trick even for kids at his level much less higher level trickers.

Does anyone have any suggestions for him to learn how to judge trick?

He just needs to hang out with judges who will explain as they go while they call tricks. I do not think there is a fast track method to learning it.

@bojans Have him be a secretary for a trick caller and then help reconcile pink sheets.  If he can reconcile he'll pick it up so much faster.

USA Waterski also has practice videos online for calling that show how the run was called.  Test him on these with the link below:

There are videos available on the USAWSWS site to be used for instructional spurloseste for judging. Go to Menu, Disciplines, Slalom Trick Jump, More, Resourses, for officials. You’ll get a Menü of trick Video to watch

@Jibbo, yes it does. As a judge/individual user, you can dowload it (you need a computer and a compatible Android tablet). It is great for learning and practicing.

Being a boat judge for tricks helps a lot as well, and you only need to learn to say “green” and “position trick”.

@Jibbo eyeTrick is a great tool to improve your trick judging. The slightly reduced speed and ability to pause the video to enter the tricks stops it being completely overwhelming. The predictive model helps you understand which tricks typically follow which. And the benchmarking process allows you to judge videos then compare your pass to an expert judges pass and easily review the tricks where you had a difference. @dchristman eyeTrick is FREE to use in Class C Tournaments and in practice.

You will need the server version of the software that will be available to download next week.

Also available next week (in the software you currently have) will be the tournament training system that adds 2 or 4 other judges passes to the pass you've judged so you can practice the reconciliation process

Thank you for encouraging your son to learn to judge all 3 events.  Fast tracking for slalom and jump is pretty easy. Tricks takes time, dedication, and practice to develop the skills. We need new blood here. I've seen trick judges holed up for 8 hrs at a time calling tricks from video. They could use a break. If you are going with him,  maybe you both could learn how run the computer video timing and calling system. , (if you are a techie). Just being a secretary is helpful too.
