@Jody_Seal unfortunately the sport of waterskiing lacks parody, under perfect conditions the same athletes will win everytime, I guess I am in the minority where I like to see grit and mental toughness decide the podium

@Bill22 also @danemechler ran 10.75 meter line both rounds...never mentioned that either but I guess it got in the way of narrative to discuss the “dangerous” conditions

@Horton 4 injuries is the biggest list of injuries in one given tournament....is there any historical data to back that up? Or is that based on your opinion? How do you know any of the other injuries were not just athletes laying on the line?

Something that wasn’t mentioned was how long it was between the skiers round and the runoff for the men’s finals, I believe the 3 finalist were the 3 of the first 5 skiers to ski in the finals, so they probably sat there for nearly an hour before coming off the dock cold at 10.75

@Horton so you know going into the competition that the conditions are going to be sketchy and you choose to still compete because that was your choice then after the competition blast the event organizers for something you knew before attending the event?? If Dodd wanted to make a statement he should have chose to not participate.

@JackQ you risk injury every time you put on a ski. Skiing in those conditions is probably what made you the skier you are today

 

I watched the entire women’s final and did not see any noticeably different conditions for the competitors.

 

What I did see was some amazing competition. Manons 11.25 pass in the runoff was pure grit and determination and watching Regina after she was dead in the water around 1 throw caution to the wind and nearly get around two was beyond impressive.

it’s funny to see everyone bitching about the conditions. Maybe if you got off the private lakes with ideal conditions these “terrible conditions” would not seem so bad. It’s all relative

Great women’s finals, thought Regina had two watching it live but going back over slow mo looked like a good call from judges

World class athletes should be able to compete in any conditions and welcome the challenging conditions. The conditions don’t look dangerous at all just not gonna see anyone world records but that doesn’t mean it will not be a great competition.

Bruce Jenner, now known as Caitlin used to come to my uncles ski school regularly, he also brought Lynn Swan a couple times

 

 

@Than_Bogan I am not a taxidermist but have skinned several different animals being an avid hunter, I have skinned animals head up, head down, hanging or flat on the ground. But the only cat I have skinned is a bobcat and you could definitely skin them several different ways ?

@andjules I think the difference is alpine jumping you are not leveraging yourself against a boat to generate the velocity you are just trying to be aerodynamic as you let gravity take you down hill and alpine skiing you are jumping down hill, basically a controlled fall. Completely different than waterski jumping

As a math nerd I would have assumed the key to jumping distance would be based on momentum (=mass*velocity) which would explain why men jump farther than women considering men are on average heavier and stronger (so able to achieve higher velocity). I think the ski angle is gonna be based off ramp angle? Curious did they jump off different height ramps?

Big thanks to @Ryota for all the help finding a place to ski in Japan. Japan is a beautiful country and having a place to ski makes it that much sweeter living here

 

Will is a beast and the fact he has been skiing at such a high level for so long is a testament to his athleticism and training. No sense starting out a pass in practice by giving up your angle behind the boat just to hit the gates. His onside turn is the best in the business
