So I finally got my '18 65" Syndicate Omni. Bought it used for $725 -delivered. The ski is absolutely beautiful and is basically new. I have been looking at replacing my '12 67" Radar Theory. I'm 145 lbs and usually ski at 32 MPH. (PB 22 off 34 MPH or 15 off 34 MPH). I wanted a new ski as I'm trying to work on 34 MPH and the Theory was advertised as a 28-32 MPH ski.
I previously tried a '17 Vapor and an older '13? Senate C as possible replacements. Here are my observations/opinions.
1. The ski is very similar in size to the Senate C. The width is about the same but the front has that distinctive HO girth to it in the front. The ski has a lot of front rocker to it compared to the Senate and and Theory. I didn't have the '17 Vapor but I'm positive that it had a lot more rocker than that ski. (more on that later). It seems like maybe they added some more to the 18's.
2. The hole pattern is standard HO but it still pisses me off they don't keep the ski backwards compatible for ALL previous HO bindings. I have EXO bindings and had to drill the ski and put screw inserts in. This is NOT for the faint of heart. It turned out perfect and looks exactly like the other holes on the ski, but it takes some serious time and patience. (I skied the first set with a modified adapter plate just to make sure I was going to keep the ski before I drilled).
3. First set - Got the ski out for it's first ride with stock settings. I ran 32.3 MPH/15 off (which I can hit 90+% of the time). First thing I noticed was how stable it was on my first wake crossing. The Senate and the Vapor both seemed to be "loose" which is not a feeling I am used to. Not saying it's bad but it's different from my Theory. The Theory is extremely stable crossing the wake. I love the fact that the Omni is very stable as well. Immediately this gave me confidence to start running the course. I shadowed the buoys going down and decided to try run a pass on the way back. Again the ski felt very stable, but I had some problems with the turns. I was a little far forward on some turns and wheelied a few others. I made 2 of the 5 passes but it was messy. Although my turns were erratic, it was easy to get and maintain angle.
4. Second set - I decided to move my bindings forward an 1/8 of an inch and move the fin back as far as it would go. I figured I was coming from a 67 so these settings would more closely resemble what I had been successful with. Bingo! The ski really performed. Got all 6 passes at 32.3/15 off. Felt a lot like my Theory but it is definitely easier to get and hold the angle coming off the ball. You can tell it can make some very sharp turns but that's not how I like to ski. With the fin back it made nice wide arcing turns that allowed me plenty of time to get in the best position for the pull. It seems that the rocker makes this ski more reactive to weight movement then some other ski's. If you really get the weight on the front of the ski, that huge nose engages and the ski really slows. I noticed this first when I pulled out before the gates. When I got the handle low and my weight on the front, I lost a lot more speed than usual and the ski wanted to turn in before I was ready.
After that set I had to put the boat back on the lift and tuck it in for a little bit as we headed out for a non skiing summer vacation. I'll update the forum after I get a few more sets in. I also have a Denali fin coming so I'll update the OP when I try that baby out. I'm nursing a few injuries from my other warm weather passions (running, golf, tennis and surfing) so I hope I can come back off of vacation healed and ready to set some new PBs in skiing!
