  4. Contact: Berkeley Water Ski Club President Russ Selsor rbskiing@aol.com The Berkeley Water Ski Club is proud to announce a tribute to Henry Winkler and the 46th anniversary of the Jump the Shark (Happy Days Season 5, Episode 3, aired in 1977). Jump the Shark was one of the most famous water skiing scenes in the history of television! That episode made water skiing a very “cool” sport and did a lot to promote the sport of water skiing. On September 16 & 17, 2023, the Berkeley Water Ski Club will host The Happy Days of Collegiate Skiing Reunion water ski tournament at 8320 King Road in Dixon, California. Numerous current and former regional and national champions along with high level amateur skiers will be participating in the slalom, trick, and jump events. The highlight will be when we honor Fonzie/Henry Winkler by reenacting The Jump the Shark! The event will also include a reenactment of the famous episode where Fonzie jumps over 14 garbage cans!! Daredevil Doug Klang, who used to ride with Evil and Robbie Knievel, will be performing this reenactment. Since Henry Winkler is a former accomplished water skier, and for his role in supporting the sport of water skiing, Henry Winkler will be presented an honorary lifetime membership to the Berkeley Water Ski Club and a lifetime membership to USA Water Ski and Wake Sports. The tournament is a fund raiser, with all net proceeds going to collegiate water ski teams. The other purpose of the tournament is to get former collegiate skiers back into water skiing, as there are hundreds of former collegiate skiers who started careers and new families and are having a hard time getting back into skiing.
  5. Waterski Pro Tour is excited to announce the introduction of Stats, a new platform that provides waterski fans with more in-depth data on their favorite skiers and their performances. As the season crescendos to a final conclusion, full focus is on the '23 Tour Leaderboards. With this in mind Stats graphically demonstrates each Tour skier's potential to secure as high a ranking as possible at the end of the season. Stats also shows where each skier's points have been earned, how their point total is calculated and their placements over the course of the season so far. Beyond this, Stats provides a career long view of each skier with all of their wins and podiums graphically presented. Up to this point the sport of waterskiing has had an issue with data preservation; many of the achievements of the greatest skiers in history are lost to the mists of time as wins and podiums are left officially unrecorded. That is the case no more: Stats keeps the record. Developed by 11 time pro event champion (+ 49 podiums) Manon Costard, Stats brings waterskiing up to date with major sports by demonstrating the performance information of all of our sports current athletes in one centralized package. See for yourself at stats.waterskiprotour.com

  10. Source https://www.waterskiprotour.com/post/california-pro-am-recap For the first 19 years of its existence the California Pro-Am, the longest running stop on the Tour, was a slalom tournament. Over the years the event showcased slalom skiing in all its forms: pro men’s, pro women’s, senior men’s (under the banner of the now defunct “Big Dawg” series) and even, for a year or two, a ‘Legends’ division at the interim speed of 35mph. Happily however, for last years 20th edition of the California Pro-Am the door was opened to a new discipline of waterskiing: jump. And thank goodness: this year the jumping had a strong argument for eclipsing the long-standing slalom event. For the first time in living memory three skiers went over 230ft (70. 1m) in one round as young gun Joel Poland’s personal best of 235ft was eclipsed by uber veteran Freddy Krueger’s 237ft in the preliminary round. Ryan Dodd, the dominant force in men’s jump for the last few years, joined the party with 230ft. Incredibly scenes that demonstrated that the inarguable top three in men’s jump could really end up in any order. The final proved this point as Freddy Krueger fell less than a foot short of Ryan Dodd’s 234ft with Poland not quite reaching his qualifying heights with a still respectable 229ft. Dodd took his first win on the Tour for the year with his first entry but Krueger remains at the summit of the John K Philips Leaderboard by virtue of his wins at LA Night Jam and King of Darkness earlier this season. With two jump events still to come before the Tour wraps up for 2023 and a field of such highly competitive jumpers, it’s anyone’s guess who will end up on top. Despite an injury ravaged field, the women’s jump side managed to produce a big spectacle. Hanna Straltsova, rectified her season after some uncharacteristically poor showings at two Tour events earlier this year with pure dominance throughout. She finished with a 188ft (57.3m) jump in the final, beating the next best competitor by 21 feet. She will be the one to beat later this year. All bets are on her leaving her early season wobbles well behind her as the season concludes. Amongst all the excitement for the jump event, the slalom didn’t disappoint. Regina Jaquess dominated throughout, qualifying as the only woman to make it through 39.5ft off (10.75m). Indeed as she beat Jaimee Bull in the final it looked like she would go deep at 41off, even behind a boat she is not endorsed by. Her starts at that line length are back, as seems to be her hunger to get to the hard end of 41off in pro events. Whitney McClintock-Rini was perhaps the biggest upset of the event as she lost to Allie Nicholson in the quarter-final round, finishing 5th. This was her first finish below 2nd in six events in a year in which she has shows incredible consistency. With her 2nd place Jaimee Bull moved back above Whitney to top spot on the Klipsch Audio Leaderboard. Jaquess though, having missed the point rich european segment of the Tour, will be charging back up across the next three events. Once again the men’s event produced the increasingly frequent occurrence of a skier missing the final with 3@41ft off (10.25m), something that was unprecedented even two years ago. Joel Poland was the unlucky fellow on this occasion, losing a run off after scoring 3 and 2.5 across the qualifying rounds. Eventually Nate Smith regained his title from last year in a win against Freddie Winter in the final. Smith increases his fairly slender lead atop the Klipsch Audio Leaderboard but Winter managed to claw two points back by taking best score of the event. So the dominant skiers in each division took the titles at the 2023 California Pro-Am but as we saw, this was not the whole story. The next event is the Mastercraft Pro at the end of next week, followed closely by Malibu Open and then the slalom only Travers Grand Prix the following two weeks. It really is all to play for as the Waterski Pro Tour reaches its conclusion for 2023.

  12. 2023 Herb's Cup from Radar Skis on Vimeo. Herb’s Cup is like no other slalom event in the world, and for good reason. This tournament is our representation of the creativity and innovative spirit of Herb O’Brien, the founder of Radar Skis and the godfather of modern-day waterskiing. With an emphasis on family, and fun we flipped the traditional rules of competitive waterskiing on its head and invited a handful of the most progressive skiers on the planet to compete for the honor of hoisting the Herb’s Cup high. Straying from the traditional formula, the format at Herb’s Cup is simple, intense but simple. With seven minutes on the clock, you ski your way to your hardest pass, and then burn the rest of your time taking as many shots at that line length as possible. Skier with the highest score wins. Ties are settled by highest cumulative buoy count at that pass. The 7th annual Herb’s Cup delivered in a way that no one was expecting. With a few fresh faces in the mix it was insane to see everyone’s strategy unfold. Paige Rini took to the water first and had a fire in her eye. She made short work of 32 and 35 Off without resting in-between, she simply had the boat crew pull the rope in while spinning to save time. After roping 38 Off, she still had 4 minutes on the clock and managed to get multiple shots at 39 Off, ultimately finishing with a score of 2@39. Whitney McClintock Rini came next off the dock and was looking to give the boys a run for their money! She knew that it would take a score well into 41 Off to be in title contention so after her 35 she opted up to 39 Off to give herself the best shot of getting deep into 41. Unfortunately she just couldn’t put it all together at 39 and as the clock came to an end she would have to settle for 4.5. K.C. Wilson, the curly king of cool, came off the dock at 35 and had the crowd in awe of his smooth style After running a perfect 38 he had a killer start at 39 but just fell short of the complete pass and ended with 4.5 at 39 Off as his best attempt. Jamie Calhoun flew off the dock guns blazing and went for the 35 to 39 jump. After a couple of bobbles he made his way all the way down the pass only to find himself going 100mph at 6 ball and unable to navigate his way out the exit gates. The final score for Jamie would be 5.5. Joel Poland came off the next and his energy on the water was contagious. The crowd was roaring as he hammed it up for the fans at 35 and 38 Off. Joel’s 39 would have everyone on the edge of their seat as he needed to complete the full pass to take the lead. Joel skirted out the exit gates and took a massive hit but was your new leader. Joel was then able to navigate his way to 3 at 41 Off with a total cumulative buoys of 5.5. Robert Pigozzi may have never skied this format before but that didn’t stop him from coming up with a unique strategy. Piggy made the bold decision to start at 38 Off and completely destroyed the pass, he then came straight back and roped 39, this would leave him with almost 5 full minutes to best Joel’s score. Known for his all-or-nothing style Robert laid it down and had the crash of the day as well as a final score of 2.5 at 41. Stephen Neveu was last off the dock and as defending champion, he did not want to go home empty handed. Big Nev went with a 35 start and then opted straight to 39, a bold moved but a time saver if it works out in your favor. Unfortunately for Stephen it didn’t happen on the first try, or the second… with time chipping away he had to get it done. The crowd erupted as Neveu made his way around all 6 and out the exit gates with two minutes on the clock to best Joel’s 3@41. Neveu got the full 3 on his first attempt causing a tie in which he would need another full 3 to take the win. Stephen scored a 2.5 at 41 as the clock ran out which meant one thing. For the first time in Herb’s Cup history, we were going to a 2-Minute Super Final! 2 Minutes on the clock for our Joel Poland and Stephen Neveu. They would go out at 41 Off for a 2 minute Runoff, high score wins! Both boys piled in the boat and made their way down to the start dock for a showdown. Joel would go first and came into the course with a roaring crowd to hype him up. He was able to score 2.5 buoys at 41 Off. Nev was last and needed to get a full 3 to take the win. Stephen has two Herb’s Cup titles and is no stranger to the pressure. The fans on shore screamed and shouted as Neveu made his way around 3 ball and back to the wakes to take his 3rd Herb’s Cup Title! As Neveu skied his way to shore, fans and skiers rushed to the waters edge with cold beers in hand to congratulate the champion! Honoring the heart and creative spirit of Herb O’Brien is the driving force behind the Herb’s Cup. From the skiers and the spectators to the entire Radar family, this event ignites the pure enjoyment of the sport and reminds everyone in attendance why we chose to ski in the first place. With a setting sun, Stephen Neveu drank from Herb’s Cup for the 3rd time, toasting his memory, honoring his name.

  21. The Senate’s ability to carry speed is unmatched in the industry. This speed allows the skier to maintain width on the boat ultimately giving a sense of freedom sought after by those that ski in the course as well as those ripping open water turns. By taking our Vapor shape and adding two tenths of an inch in extra width we have created a stable riding platform. This platform creates the balance needed for a skier to feel at home, while the profile of the ski allows the skier to feel the speed and angle sought after at any level. Updated and scaled to our latest shape you have to ski this all-new 2024 Senate Pro, check it out at radarskis.com--
  22. This is Nationals week in the U.S. and Canada. The boys have skied many events over the years and have lots of quick tips to be best prepped for tournament time.
  23. In trick skiing, speed is the name of the game. We’ve worked hard to create a ski that moves from trick to trick faster than anything else on the market. The Graviton has one clean radius allowing the ski to carve smoother and roll on edge faster, making the ski drive faster to the next trick. The rocker profile, with a smaller flat spot, gives the ski the ability to spin effortlessly on toe tricks and gives it a cleaner water flow out the tip and tail for smoother loadings. Combining this with the CorFlex, GNR rails and concave in the tip and tail allows the ski to flex in the correct areas and makes the rope rock tight on landings to move to the next trick faster.
