  1. Pre-relasing for a kid under 1000 points would be very unusual.

When I say early release, it is a fall where the trick gets off but there was no injury risk. Annoying for the skier, but safer

I would say that most likely releaser was on the slow side, and/or  too strong a grip on the release rope for your friend.

  2. @Jibbo, yes it does. As a judge/individual user, you can dowload it (you need a computer and a compatible Android tablet). It is great for learning and practicing.

Being a boat judge for tricks helps a lot as well, and you only need to learn to say “green” and “position trick”.

  3. Please notice the following 2023 IWWF rule amendment on cameras:

    2022:

    5.13: Video Specifications
    Video to be used:
For Judging purposes and record review process, only video from the official cameras can be used.
The official camera may be any video from the same view (example from boat) as determined by the Homologator and Chief Judge

    2023:

    5.13: Video Specifications
    Video to be used:
For Judging purposes, only an official video, as determined by the Homologator and Chief Judge prior to the event(s), can be used. This may be any video as long as it captures the same view for the entire event (eg. from the boat).
For a record review and approval process any available video as determined by the Homologator and Chief Judge can be used.

  4. "Lean" is a part of the equation, and connected with the rest of what is done in the course.

I would venture in telling that trust, confidence or fear have little to do with not being able to the kind of lean, turns, technique, etc... that a pro like Seth can do in the video.

  5. @unksskis, good point. Trying to bend  R ol L class competitive slalom skiing to accomodate the masses is a bit like trying to change  snow ski SL rules to have more peple being able to go down a world cup course. Snow ski is not huge because of easy access to world cup gate conditions. Or FIS-certified skis. On the contrary…

  6. The competitive sport would  grow if every skier  introduces, throughout his competitive career, more than one kid (or grown-up…) to the sport that became and stayed competitive.

It would help as well if more skiers became involved in tournament organization and judging.

It will not grow if skiers just whine about boat manufacturers and sport leadership.

  7. As per IWWF’s rules, video is reviewed only if the single judge looking at the video feed disagrees with the call by the other judges (boat and tower)

“When boat video is used, the boat video will be monitored on the tower by another Judge who will advise the Chief Judge if he disagrees with the event Judges decision. In which case the Chief Judge and the review Judge will again review the video file to determine which score is correct.”

if the video judge cannot see the the buoy because of a malfunction or a blocking head, he cannot state his disagreement. The other tower judges should not use video for their live judgement.

For the video challenge protest,  “If they [the two review judges] disagree or agree that the video does not clearly overrule the score given by the Judges, then that score will stand.”  In this case, for sure the video does not clearly overrule the given score.

  8. I am sad I did not post before, lost a good triple panda opportunity…

I believe, though, that @lpskier has a point.

I do not believe in recovering from a mistake by throwing a hail mary that works 1 out of 10 times, craps your body 1 out of 10 and gets you into the drink 8 out of 10. Many of my fellow skiers do believe on that, though…

You should try to recover position and get to the next buoy, without doing crazy s@#t. If you get there, you will be fast and narrow => late.  And skiing late, buoy to buoy, not getting crazy, is something that can be practiced.

This might be different for world-class skiers, but I believe it yield more buoys and less injuries to normal skiers.
