Carrying a caliper in your carry-on

Anybody ever had the TSA open their bag and question their caliper? Last weekend on the way home from Pensacola the TSA opened my bag to see my caliper. They knew what it was. They said, "we need to look at your caliper". It was in a hard plastic box. They pulled it out, opened it and suggested that I put it in my checked baggage from now on. They thought a bigger airport might take it! MSP didn't flag the bag at all on the way down.

Anybody ever had the TSA open their bag for a caliper????

A couple months ago they found a caliper layered I my clothes bag. I generally check it with my skis but once I circled back to the house to leave the ski case but forgot about my caliper. When the bag went though the scanner they saw it and investigated. One of three recognized it and said "that's just a tool to measure parts" an asked me why I had it. I explained briefly and they let me through. It probably helped that it was the TSA Pre-Checpk lane where the process is far less intrusive.
