Baller skihard Posted June 23, 2013 Baller Share Posted June 23, 2013 I have been away for awhile but Alberta Canada is getting pounded with rain, flooding, and natural disasters. No idea how Predator Bay in Calgary is doing? The downtown core is flooded and police have it closed off. No one in or out! With he rivers being as high as they are there I hope our community didn't lose a world class ski site. Anyone from Calgary that can offer an update? Baller waterskicorey Posted June 23, 2013 Baller Share Posted June 23, 2013 I have also been wondering about what has gone on at Predator Bay? All the members of the Fraser Valley Water Ski Club hope that all the club members of Predator Bay are safe and sound, and our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Baller skihard Posted June 24, 2013 Author Baller Share Posted June 24, 2013 What a mess!
Baller SkiJay Posted June 24, 2013 Baller Share Posted June 24, 2013 The clubhouse remained only inches above the high water line, and the boat's and jump were moved to higher ground. The water was so high it was up to the roofs of the boat lifts. Lake one became part of the river with a lot of heavy debris flowing through the site. It's not yet clear how much damage has been suffered, but it's possible both ends of the lake could be washed out requiring some earth moving. No doubt the courses will need to be reset too. The water is down a few feet now, but is still high and it will be a week or two before we're operational again. The cleanup will take considerably longer. Baller Jordan Posted June 24, 2013 Baller Share Posted June 24, 2013 For a perspective about the scale of the flooding, apparently in the Saddledome (where the Calgary Flames play) the water is up to the 14th row of seats. The dressing rooms are completely underwater
Baller ForrestGump Posted June 24, 2013 Baller Share Posted June 24, 2013 Big time flooding in Calgary. A lot of city was evacuated until yesterday.
Baller SkiJay Posted June 24, 2013 Baller Share Posted June 24, 2013 Over 100,000 people have been evacuated from their homes, and it's not over. The entire downtown (meaning the Canadian oil business) is still evacuated. There's a big push on getting ready for the Stampede which is supposed to start July 5th. But most of the Stampede Grounds are still under water including the Saddle Dome. The slogan is "The show must go on... come hell or high water." Baller SkiJay Posted June 29, 2013 Baller Share Posted June 29, 2013 We can get down the hill to the ski site at Predator Bay now. The water is still high but we can finally start the cleanup and repairs this weekend. What a mess! Before the flood:
Baller jipster43 Posted June 29, 2013 Baller Share Posted June 29, 2013 @SkiJay you should come down to the Helena tournament next weekend. No flooding here. Good luck with the cleanup!
Baller drew Posted June 30, 2013 Baller Share Posted June 30, 2013 My heart goes out to all Calgarians, especially those who have sustained the personal injuries and losses, let alone the massive property damages. I am sure that Predator Bay membership is extremely bummed right now, but also hearty and proud--here's to a smooth restoration!
Baller SkiJay Posted June 30, 2013 Baller Share Posted June 30, 2013 Thanks @Drew, I'll pass your message along. And thanks for the invitation @jipster43. I'd feel guilty ducking out for a ski right now, but here's hoping you have a fabulous tournament in Helena. Maybe next summer. We're hosting the Canadian nationals and the Pro Shootout again this summer, and there's a lot of work to do before then. I have to say though, it was pretty cool how many members showed up today for some real heavy lifting. Everyone went home pretty much sunburned, covered in mud and smiling. There was a crew on lake 1, another crew digging out the Clubhouses, some heavy equipment loading and trucking mud off the site, and this crew digging out the dock on lake 2:
Baller SkiJay Posted July 12, 2013 Baller Share Posted July 12, 2013 There are still signs of the flood damage everywhere and there's a lot of cleanup still to be done, but Calgary's Predator Bay is back open for skiing again. This summer's Pro Shootout (August 8 & 9) and the Canadian Nationals (August 10 - 14) are still on.
